WTF? Cause of Crash

I was playing Fortress Forever about thirty minutes ago, when my game froze. The Vista cursor was frozen in the center of the screen, I was frozen within game inside of a wall, the wall to my left was colored red and distorted at the edges. The wall to my forward was also colored green and distorted in the same way. I tried to ctrl-alt-del my way out of the game, but that did not work, so my presumption that the game had crashed was wrong. I turned my computer off by the front button, and when my computer kicked back in, the operating system logo was behind a mass of brown dots, a pattern repeated across the screen vertically and horizontally (*). When the boot message came up, the text was jagged and jumbled, as if it had been duplicated and repositioned over itself, just out of alignment. When the Vista loading bar came up, it was behind the same mass of dots, just white. I waited for the loading bar to finish, then I was presented with a black screen. I turned my computer off by the button, by the power supply, and by the surge protector. Then, I flicked them back on in order, and tried again. My computer seems to be in working order now. But, thing is, what could have caused such a crash? I have had this computer since August 08 when I built it part by part without a problem, so I don't think the components should be going bad.

* The pattern for the dots looked something like this, but with more spacing in between and not as dense:

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
.. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

Sounds like your video card got a bit too hot.

Check your bios to see if it has an auto shutoff feature for when it overheats.

I had nearly the exact same issue with an older ATI card that was overheating. Only happened once, when playing doom3 (lol @me ) when it first came out for like 20 hours straight. It did the funky text in BIOS thing exactly too.

Which video card is it? You could set the fan to a more aggressive state to prevent heat issues, or even much lower to see if overheating is the cause of the problem in the first place. herf derf common sense

My XFX videocard was acting up and it took me MONTHS to convince them that it was actually hardware. They actually tried to pull the "Vista broke it" card on me EVEN though I had the same issues in XP. I sent them videos of what was CLEARLY a busted graphics card and they said "Disable aero." At least they finally shipped me a working card.

The new video card is just as useless, at least the drivers are. Getting bombarded with "Display driver nvlddmkm has stopped responding and has successfully restored." I haven't been able to game in three or four weeks. Fucking Vista's a POS.

I had 64-bit Vista without a single issue. However Windows 7 is better

lol...no kidding. I've seen quite a bit of chatter on a few of the discussion lists on this subject alone.

Bridget, did your configuration ever work? Did you ever have a "known good" point of operation? If so any chance you might work backwards through what changed between now and then? Turn off features? Reduce resolution and screen rate and see if you can get stable...then ratchet it back up?

I formatted. There was nothing to go back to. I formatted after I installed the video card. Then, I reinstalled my drivers. Nothing will fix this piece of shit. I have tried old drivers, new drivers, generic drivers. I updated service pack, Vista, DirectX. I lowered the graphical settings, I lowered the performance options, I did everything I can possibly fucking think to do. It won't work and.. I just don't give a shit any more.

Would you mind providing a detailed list of what's in your system build? Brand, model and firmware versions. Include things as basic as RAM.

What I'm thinking you should eliminate are:
  1. Firmware bug/compatibility
  2. Weak/Defective PSU
  3. Incompatible RAM
  4. Incompatible Hardware

Did you recycle any hardware or is this a brand new build for all components?
