That was probably an OEM key then... Schools get in big trouble for screwing with license agreements :P

Neither OEM nor Retail nor Upgrade versions of Windows 98 requires activation nor are the licenses monitored by Microsoft.

Yes they don't require activation and yes they aren't "monitored" over the internet but if someone audits your organizaiton and finds you're using the same retail key on every computer then you're in trouble...

Yes, but that's true of all software installed without owning the appropriate number of licenses.

I've used the same legal version of XP on I-don't-know-how-many-PCs, sometimes only days apart, and have never had a problem. Not once. They all even validate on MS's site as genuine.

LUCKY? I honestly don't know.

As I have said, twice now, you should only be able to use the same CD key 3 times, and once again every 6 months.

Nope didn't work. Now I'm stuck with a version of XP that warns me every few minutes with a balloon in the lower right that says "You have 30 days left to validate your copy of Windows"

Shit.

Get Microsoft on the phone and ask them to reset your key. That's what I do

I got ahold of WinXP Pro a loooong time ago and its an exe file so I usually take one of those Dell Restore discs, clean install WinXP Home and don't even bother with activating. Then I'll install WinXP Pro on top of that and it validates each and every time. I guess if I knew how to convert that exe into an install file, I'd save ass loads of time.

I think this is the same method used with the Vista Upgrade trick but anyways... Tyrus, call Microsoft and tell them to reset your key or get ahold of WinXP Pro from someone since it seems no one has problems activating that.
