ETF is a very close remake of Q3F, and by the same dev team if I'm not mistaken. Anyway yeah I've played ETF and I think it's pretty good. But I suppose no Q3F player has any reason to move on to ETF and it doesn't appeal to new players. So hardly anyone plays it.
I showed ETF to two friends of mine who are casual gamers and they just couldn't be interested in it. I think it's mainly because of the lack of esthetics - not from a technical point of view but from the design. There's something dark and slightly unfriendly about it that scares that kind of gamer away. Hard to say what exactly. [] Luckily the FF team clearly understands how important concept work is. [/] |

A friend of mine (casual gamer) tried ETF and quit within a few hour as he was totally bewildered / didn't understand what was going on.
I think that sums up the main problem associated with bringing TF to the masses. |

The other problem with getting new TF players is that many/most gamers like a very REAL feel to their games. All the popular FPSs have a very real feel to them, even the sci-fi games like Halo and Halo 2. TF games are as far from real as you can get. If you know one person who can get hit by a rocket, thrown into the air, land on a roof and servive... You need to be introduced to the REAL WORLD

people who like reality in their games should be locked in a room together with shotguns and told only one of them gets to leave.

Thats why I dont care for games like the Splinter cell series. If I wanted to sneak around all nigh and interrogate people then kill them I would just do it to homeless people. |

ETF is the absolute best fortress mod out as of right now. It is run on a newer engine than anyother fortress mod out, except for Unreal Fortress Evolution, which is very buggy and pretty much in its primal stages of development. However ETF is very fine tuned, which came from over 3 years of q3f play.
Give ETF a try! It's a must play mod! Oh and another reason it scores above the rest is, ITS FREE. Enemy Territory is a free download and so is ETF. What do you got to lose? Quote:
Every q3f player has moved to etf. Why? Becuase the Q3F devteam (aka Splash Damage) abandoned Q3F to work on a newer project called "Enemy Territory". Right before completely abandoning q3f, they had released q3f 2.0 (a total rebuild of q3f from the ground up) and it had many bugs and needed plenty of attention. The q3f dev team stuck around for a few more releases of q3f, fixing a few bugs here and a few bugs there, however each update was spaced out among months upon months. The lack of updates to q3f made it lose audience quickly and most quit playing the mod. Q3f 2.3 was the final release, and whatever bugs were still present, they were going to leave as it was. Also, Q3F 2.0 introduced punk buster which got rid of all the players with non-authentic cd-keys. (that was a huge blow to the audience, as I was one of the ones that dropped ) When the dev team released their new project called "Enemy Territory" a few guys came up with the idea that they could port q3f 2.3 to this new game "Enemy Territory", hence Enemy Territory Fortress. Then the remaining Q3F 2.3 followers switched over to ETF. ETF was 99% a clone of 2.3. However a few things did get changed. Now, with a new staff once again, q3f had a team that would actually give attention to its followers. When ETF was released, there was a rekindling of the mod and it was huge once again, although not quite as huge as q3f's original release. However it was at least something! But, all good things came to an end. The audience then again started to fall off in numbers. Seems that maybe, with the creation of newer games like BF1942 and even some MMORPG's, this Fortress game just couldn't hold its audience like q3f once did. There are though, the die hard fans who still play this mod every day, like me. There are die hard fans in every mod as well. Can you believe people still play TFC and QWTF? WTF ? ...or something like that Splash Damage is now working on a game called "Enemy Territory Quake Wars" I think there is a demo or teaser of it somewhere out there. From what I hear, it will be quite good! |

It fell away quickly because it was just Q3F 2.3 for the most part. Nothing was done to address the lack of new players finding the mod, or helping new players to understand how to play it.
It's a solid mod, but it didn't really address any of the problems that faced Q3F. Oh, and Quake Wars is looking awesome. |

One of the major reasons Q3F lost most of its following was because of a devteam that just wasn't dedicated enough. It's understandable that they had bigger and better things to do, and that they had to move on, but that is what killed Q3F.
Fortress Forever's main key in success will be in how dedicated it's dev team is. I sure hope you guys stick to it and don't leave us all hanging when you get hired by some other company for "bigger and better things".!!!!!!! |
