I take my tower to work once a month and hook it in to the network main switch. The servers are set up to automatically scan whatever is hooked up to that part of the network. I don't know what program it is though...
Virus free since 2001. |

great way to potentially compromise the security of the network, brooding!
I have an old version of Norton I've been using. it's almost up, though... think I'll give Clamwin or AVG or something free a try. I haven't had a virus in years, a lot of avoiding them is just common sense + having a basic firewall. The spyware/adware stuff is a bigger threat, but again, educated behavior can keep you safe for the most part. Get a lot less of that junk now that I use Firefox, too. Trend Micro PCCillin and Panda seem the best based on how good their free online scans are (which I use to clean up friends' computers sometimes). Norton & McAffee seem to be falling behind, especially when it comes to trojans and spyware. It's pretty sad that the internet versions of Trend Micro & Panda do a better job than and installed and paid for version of Norton :/ EDIT: You REALLY need to add a choice for Trend Micro PC Cillin, it's one of the most popular and best. |

You need to add a "none" category. I'm AVless and haven't had a problem yet.
Well, my PC is fucked, but since I became intelligent about what I view, my laptop is free. |

Firefox + Ad-Aware SE Pro + Tuneup Utilities 2006 + Windows XP Firewall = None.
Just use more common sense and be careful about what you view. There's really no need for AV programs anymore... Unless you have 12 year old kids who like to smack talk on counter-strike and go download hacks from myg0t... |

sophos on my laptop. updates from college. common sense does 99% of the work though. preventative measures eliminates problems before they even arise. for example, noscript is running on both my pc and laptop, and stick heavy filters on my email accounts.

Never used one and never will. If you know what you are doing on a computer and what not to click, you do NOT need any sort of system clogging AV, although the occasional spybot or adaware needs to be fired up.
You did need a good firewall before SP2 though. |

I used Norton for years and years until I finally realised it just kept getting more and more bulky and more and more useless. I'm using AVG now and so far I like it. It is only pain when it decides randomly to scan or update when I've told it in the options not to.

Gotcha, Brooding. But if you aren't going to have an active AV running in the background, you might as well just use free online stuff like these:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm Save ya from carting your tower around. Then again, maybe yours is more portable than my behemoth |

Nod32, That and Kaspersky seem a long way ahead of everything else, Both in terms of detection and not bogging down your pc with useless crap i.e norton+symantec.

Used to use Norton, then it just became to much of a resource hog so now use Grisoft AVG.
