Building a PC
This isn't a "gee look how big my e-penis is" thread.
Has anyone ever had the stock I/O shield that comes with a chassis ever match the motherboard you build? I've built hundreds of systems and I cannot recall that ever happening.

Never. What I really love is plugging in all of the case's front ports (USB, Firewire, Speaker/Mic passthrus, etc) to the motherboard. Always a joy to get that all right.

It's just there as a placeholder. If you take a look at it, you'll see that none of the stuff is even near the standard areas.
EDIT: Try it without the manual, Jiggles . And no markings on the motherboard. While having parents scream down your back.

What a waste though SilverFox. It's a waste of time and materials. Consider, too, that they're paying someone to put that BS shield in place.

The I/O shield is the shiny sheet metal shield where your USB, Serial, LAN and other ports built onto the motherboard protrude through the back of the chassis. It help keep those ports in place and prevent damage to where they connect to the motherboard when you connect and disconnect cables. The I/O shield basically allows the ports to come through and keeps fingers, mice, cat's and small children out of your system.
Here's what can happen if you don't use it.

They are talking about the metal plate that comes with your motherboard that is made to fit into your case so all the I/O ports from the motherboard (USB, Keyboard, Mouse, Onboard Sound, Etc) line up correctly.
Here's a picture. |

Why can they not just standardize this stuff? -_-
I mean, we got loads o' standards... practically everything software and hardware wise is standardized. Hell, even the case's formfactor is standardized. Why is it that motherboard manufacturers and case manufacturers get in line and get these things a couple millimeters to the right or whatever and make them work? ): Mine did not line up either. /=

Because different motherboards offer different features. Some don't have onboard sound. Some have an onboard video card. Some only have 2 USB ports where others have 4 or even more. Some have firewire. Some have more than 1 network adapater.
Obviously the more expensive the motherboard the more bells and whistles you'll have to accomodate. That is exactly why motherboard manufacturers include that plate. The question now becomes (and Innoc said this earlier), why do case manufacturuers even bother putting that plate in there to begin with? |

the plate in most cases can be taken out and replaced. on the comp im building now i pulled out the plate and placed the new one in(the one that came with the MB) only to find that when i went to install the MB the plate kept me from doing so. it didnt line up and had to remove the plate.
and as far as the mice. i had one living in my comp. i would actually sit there and watch him run back and forth in and out of my comp(where the plate was supposed to be). it wasnt until i noticed he ate my rolos(had the gold foil and paper in the bottom of my comp) that i decided it was war. shortly after war was declared his neck got broke.

I remember the stock one working fine years ago. Really haven't paid any attention to it over the past few years though.

Thanks for the explanation.
The computer I have has a bent up case and the MoBo doesn't line up. So when I have to put in a new card, I have to bend back the metal part of the card so it slots in and then duct tape it into place so it doesn't move too much :-\ Part of the reason why I need a new computer. |
