CPU temps, good idle, insane load

I was wondering if anyone can help me with my situation. My CPU idles at 40 some degrees Celsius. The cores idle at 45-50c some each. These are normal temperatures. However, once I load up a game and commit to it for some time, the CPU reads 88c and the cores are at 90c each. If I run it long enough, the computer will hard-crash requiring a restart. Any idea what the problem could be? It's an E8400 C2D. It's been working fine since august 08, stock speeds and stock cooler.

EDIT: My cpu is idling 36 with 40 on each core. It was hot earlier.

yeah, check that your heatsink is doing its job of pulling heat away from the processor. if the heatsink is cool while its at 80-90 degrees, then something's wrong.

Works like a charm. Also make sure all your fans are in working condition, see if you can tell the speed of your fan on your CPU.

It might also be a good idea to invest in a good heatsink if you are using the stock cooler.

I use the same E8400 processor, so that heatsink should work fine.

One time I was trying to get the fan off my cpu, and the fan was stuck to the cpu because of the thermal paste. Pulled the whole thing out and it was stuck to the fan. I ended up ruining some of the pins as I wasn't expecting that to happen.

But, yeah I'd get some new thermal paste

That's what I would do.

Pull the heatsink off of your cpu, Thoroughly blow out all the fins. Clean off old heat sink compound, put back on with new compound.

If you have it overclocked try setting back to normal.

Also Check your video card, I had an issue once where it was the vid card over heating and causing the system crash after extended play.
