Need coder for a Smash TV mod
<Sh4x> I wanna make a Smash TV mod for hl2
<Circuitous> I'm in. <Sh4x> coop play, 8ppl <Sh4x> top down view <Sh4x> lots of simple monster models <Circuitous> God yeah. <Circuitous> I'm so in. <Circuitous> I'm so in it's ridiculous. <Sh4x> lol ok stop making fun of me now <Circuitous> I'm not, dude <Imbrifer> i am, secretly <Circuitous> I'd fucking love a Smash TV mod. <Circuitous> That game ruled. <Sh4x> heh <Sh4x> yeah, <Circuitous> Rack up some ridiculous cash gettin' cheered on by hot bitches while you murder dudes en masse. <Circuitous> What's not to like? <Sh4x> I can make textures and maps lol... <Circuitous> Oh those would be easy. <Circuitous> Fuck the whole mod would be easy. <Sh4x> seriously tho it would be awesome, Ive been thinking about it alot <Circuitous> It'd be pretty easy to make I think. <Sh4x> it would just be pure fun madness <Sh4x> yeah its not too complicated too <Circuitous> Just get some maps that accomodate top-down play, modify some stock HL2 weapons. <Sh4x> xactly <Circuitous> Make some simple player models. <Circuitous> And write some good AI. <Sh4x> Ai doesnt even need to be good lol <Sh4x> just follow players <Circuitous> HL2 bots would prolly work. <Sh4x> need very simple monster models so that it doesnt lag too much with many on screen <Circuitous> Right, right. <Circuitous> They're top-down anyway and hyper zoomed-out so who cares? <Sh4x> but yeah... imagine 8 ppl coop killing monsters and stuff <Sh4x> xactly <Circuitous> You'd only need hi-poly shit for the announcer segments. <Circuitous> Explaining the fuckin-awesome prize you just won. <Sh4x> lol <Circuitous> With hot bikini bitches. <Sh4x> I'd LOOOVE to map for that <Circuitous> Dude. <Circuitous> Fuckin' do it. <Circuitous> Make the map and move the default camera in the SDK. <Circuitous> How hard could it be? <Sh4x> i cant code for shit or the mod would already exist man <Circuitous> lol. <Circuitous> I wonder if we can get a hold of anyone. <Circuitous> Who can codezor. <Circuitous> It's easy shit, seriously. <Imbrifer> good luck <Circuitous> Would the camera be stuck in the center of the room or would it hover over the player? <Sh4x> I was thinking stuck <Sh4x> that way everyone sees the same thing <Sh4x> of the arena <Sh4x> might be easier to code the camera to hover over the player tho <Circuitous> Yeah. <Circuitous> Less concern over perspective as well. <Sh4x> as long as the arena doesnt extend too far out of the player view when you stand in corner <Sh4x> you know what i mean <Circuitous> Right. <Sh4x> you got me all excited again... not cool. lol <Circuitous> rofl. <Sh4x> coop is the future of online play too <Circuitous> Oh sure. <Circuitous> But DM would be fun, too. <Sh4x> dm what <Sh4x> player vs player lol <Sh4x> ? <Circuitous> Imagine it. Eight players duking it out against each other, while also making sure they don't get taken down by waves of monsters. <Sh4x> hahah <Circuitous> Ah man. <Sh4x> yeah, lets of variations can be made without too much coding <Sh4x> lots* <Sh4x> there could be a mode "protect the chick" <Sh4x> where a chick walks in the arena <Sh4x> and you have to kill monsters before they get her <Circuitous> Wasn't that also in the original? <Sh4x> dunno <Circuitous> I can see it now. <Sh4x> i only played Super Smash TV <Circuitous> KEEP THE GIRL ALIVE! <Circuitous> then the dude just, like <Circuitous> turns and shoots the girl in the head <Circuitous> Announcer: "COOOOOOLD BLOODED! $5,000 BONUS!" <Circuitous> rofl. <Sh4x> I'm sure we can bribe aftershock or mulchman to work for us <Circuitous> Doubt it. <Circuitous> Mulchie's hard enough to get working on FF. <Circuitous> And Aftershok is a busy bitch. <Sh4x> lol i know i was kidding <Circuitous> Oh okay. <Sh4x> they have enough with ff <Sh4x> but yeah <Sh4x> if we could just get 1 coder interested <Sh4x> to start slowly <Sh4x> im up for mapping that shit for sure * Dospac has joined #ff_beta * Harm sets mode: +o Dospac <Circuitous> Dospac code a SmashTV mod. |

I tried going the nice way 2 or 3 times before and it did nothing. I get people saying ooohh fuck yeah this game was awesome and it's so addicting... but I've never found a programmer interested to collaborate.
I really wish I knew how to code... I'm pretty sure everyone would enjoy the nice co-op fragging of little zombies, blood spashing everywhere, super powerups, etc I learned the basic of c++ before but when I look at hl2 source code I know for a fact that I just couldn't do it eventhough it doesn't look to be very hard for an experienced programmer |

I could have sworn I remembered seeing a Source tutorial that showed how one could change the camera to be third person... maybe you could adapt it to your needs and make it top down? I think the tutorial was on ModDB...
Here's the tutorial. I haven't read the entire thing, but it does mention a GTA 2 style camera in the beginning, so it may be worth a shot.

Cool thanks! Now because of you I'm installing visual studio 2008 and every damn microsoft sdk on my pc lol
I'm gonna give it a go and try to get something started... it's probably not gonna work but whatever. At least I will have tried! Life is just too short to be able to do all I'd like to do... I would need a second life to learn how to code properly. |

You need 2003 or 2005 to compile code. It doesn't quite work with 2008 yet.

Got it working.
I don't even know why I setup all of this, I know jack shit about programming... all I can do is follow tutorials so I'm not quite there yet with this mod project. |

I followed the thirdperson tutorial and it worked but it's still not exactly what I want it to be... it would be so much better if a programmer would care about this and team up on this, that way I could stick to what I'm good at which is mapping and making textures... Seriously I can't beleive nobody cares about a Smash TV mod for hl2!! It would be so freakin awesome!!!

Basic C++ won't get you anywhere, you'll need to understand all the aspects of pointers and classes and such to work with the SDK, and then learn how they set it up to be coded with.

When I was learning to code teh internets, I set a small goal. First thing I did was try to accomplish that small goal no matter how long it took.
I would make a simple box room for a map with no lights for your first map, and focus on something easy like trying to get the camera to be a top-down view. Start with that.

Maybe you can do this without coding, just make a hammer mod, like what this guys done here:
http://www.taz00.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=86 edit: check out what this guy can do, just with Hammer: http://sdk-project.com/ Last edited by BumGravy; 02-26-2008 at 03:05 PM. |
