FrenchToast: Either you like mainstream and go with the flow or you don't. Just fucking pick one.

For electric bass in Metal I wanna say Martin Mendez, John Myung and Steve DiGiorgio.

If you honestly like Flea you should check out Les Claypool. Although I haven't really listened all that much to Primus (and I don't care for that kind of music, or RHCP's) I know that they have a similary style, but the difference is that Les is efficient.

I sincerely hope I'm not talking out of my ass with that last paragraph.

Does that leave everyone out but me?
P.S. No, I'm actually part of that group too. Even had the opportunity to play with zztop once.

Please elaborate.

And I haven't ever gotten paid to play, but I do have a musical background, mostly in Jazz. Both my parents were once proffesional musicians, and my dad is friends with many successful Jazz musicians, I've just never picked up on that kind of music.

Shit yes, Martinie is an amazing bass player. Although my taste in music doesnt include some of the classic bands, I must commend Iron Maiden. The talent in that band is incredible

PS: I have absolutely no history in music, this is just personal opinion.

I dont like RHCP at all. I will give you that the bass work in that band is very good. Les claypool is better though. I have seen both bands live and I have to give it to primis on that one. French is right about new music sucking though. I think bands like nickle back are the downfall of music. Emo is so gay it makes me want to gouge out my eardrums with a spoon.

Well I guess it all really depends on what kind of jazz you're talking about. If you're talking about free jazz or avant-garde, then yes, its VERY hard to grasp that kind of music. But thats how Coltrane and the like made their living, and many people liked it (I cannot grasp it tho). But personally, ragtime... fusion... cool... they're all great. Jazz is really one of the only types of music that is purely american. Sure, it has influences from Europe and Africa (syncopation etc) but it was made and played here, and thats a great thing.

As far as bassists, I cannot think of one greater than Victor Wooten. He has a couple songs, lets see here, um... A Show of Hands, Classical Thump... I cannot think of any others off hand but I love those.

And that list of guitarists earlier, no Stevie Ray Vaughan?

Of course. I just figure that Maiden goes without saying.
"Maiden owns."
"OMG WHY IS THIS NEWS?!"

New music sucks if you don't know what to look for. Let me tell you something: 80's music sucked. Same with 70's music. There were a few exceptions, but otherwise, most music just tends to suck.

Tired of people bitching about how there isn't good music anymore. Damn.

Sure there's good music nowadays, you just have to dig back to the oldies. I really can't think of one band that's still making music (except RHCP and Jamiroquai) that's really good.

Bassist, opening a can of worms: Geddie Lee.

I hate Rush, and everything about them, but... I can't deny that talent.

You just aint looking. You only see pop(ular) music of all periods and happen to like the classic rock genre. Don't listen to MTV or VH1 or whatever it is these days to look for new music.

Avant-garde is greatness, by the way.

Quoted for truth. Refusing to watch MTV was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
