hammer errors

i tried to follow the convert half-life 1 map to half-life 2 map. I run hammer in steam, select my rmf file and click open. after i click open, my computer crashes and the screen freezes. ctrl alt delete does not work either.

also, When i quit half-life 2 after playing for atleast 30 minutes, it gives me an illegal operation.

it also does this with hammer.

the problem might be windows 98. Half-life 2 runs perfectly, but after i quit the game, i get the illegal operation message, and i have to restart my computer in order to play half-life 2 again.

in the error message, it has an nvidia message in the details section.

any help would be appreciated

First thing would be to make sure you have the current-up-to-date drivers installed for your video card. Since you mention Nvidia, I can only assume its related to your video card. Otherwise, I have no idea why that error would come up.

Just in case, heres the link to Nvidia's site: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

The new hammer seems to hate .rmf files. The easiest way to open an old format map is to get it in .map format (export as .map from HL1 hammer) and then import the .map in HL2 hammer. This works fine.

i tried looking at the system resources when i was running hammer 4.0, and it was 0 %

i think thats why it was so laggy. For some reason hammer uses 512 mb of memory when its not even compiling.

anyone know how to fix it?

Try increasing your virtual memory? Or decreasing the number of undos?

Grab another stick of 512mb, and your problem should be solved.

Even so...unless I miss my guess...MS NEVER fixed the flaw in Win98 that does not permit anything over 512MB to be properly addressed. The only workaround they came up with basically disabled everything above 512 to prevent anything from be addressed up into an illegal memory location.
