Do we live in a matrix-like world?
Here's the story written in the Times yesterday. It's just the basics of the theory, which really does seem to be just a stretch of imagination that isn't quite verifiable (at this moment in time).
Here is a very interesting 48 minute long video that discusses the ideas being pondered in cosmology and physics, as it relates to the laws of nature, our origins, a creator, and the simulation theory. Enjoy.

Very, very interesting philosophy. I've wondered it at times... perhaps we're limited to not fully understand it by our circuitry? Perhaps it is all an illusion?
This reminds me of thoughts that I'm sure everyone has... what if everything else is all fake? What if this is some kind of TV show? What if it's all a dream? As I said, a very interesting and proving philosophy. Makes you wonder...

Yeah, while these thought processes are certainly interesting the point that they have 0 evidence supporting their claims means you need to keep yourselvs in check.
It's certainly worth thinking about, and mentaly exploring. However, it's NOT worth getting upset about, or making any life altering desicions over. Hell, if you're getting excited, or upset you probably need to sit down and play some video games or something. Try watching Tron. Life inside a computer can involve glowing suits and disc throwing games. |

If we live in a matrix world, then someone made that Matrix, and that would make them your God, whether you worship them or not.

The matrix idea is born out of Descartes' "cogito ergo sum." "I think therefore I am." The only thing that can be entirely proven. Everything we recieve as information is taken in via fallible senses and processed by fallible brains.
For an example take information recieved via sight. We see in colour, but colour does not exist in a literal sense, only within our heads. It's a mode of interpreting the light reflected or radiated from a point. Yet we apply emotions to colours, the idea of beauty, feng shui, superstitions etc, to what is merely the distribution of light energy versus wavelength, passed through a lens, recieved by light receptors at the back of the eye, converted to electrical signals and processed by the brain. And who's to say that each brain processes those signals in the same way? Colour blindness is when someone can't distinguish between two colours, but it would be impossible to detect if what I saw as green was the same as what you see as green because green doesn't exist outside the mind of the individual except as a point on the light spectrum. But this can be taken further because we don't technically see light. Our brains recieve electrical signals. We see in dreams, or some people do, there are even very rudimentary artificial eyes in development. All information we have is recieved via the sense which are fallible, secondary sources. Except the thoughts inside our heads, but they are based on what we recieve from the senses so aren't certain in the purest sense of the word. The only thing that I can know is that because I have thoughts, then I exist. But I find the whole thing to be nigh pointless. Intellectual masterbation. You can either say, based on that, that accepted knowledge is down to probabilities and the odds on falsehood are so small as to be negligible. Or that we can't truely learn anything. The probabilities side of things is utterly unprovable, you can't judge what the probabilities would be when you can't trust your information so the idea is useless and doesn't change anything. But equally believing that we can't prove anything doesn't make a blind bit of difference to anyone or anything because there's not a thing that can be done about it. Not even theoretically in the furtherest reaches of the future. It's an unassailable obstacle. So whatever you decide you continue as you are. It's a pointless, if mildly interesting, concept. There's much, much more interesting philosophy out there though. Quote:

Nice post... seriously. I'm glad to see I am not the only one that wrestles with these thoughts on a daily basis.

Well, I must say it really doesn't have much to do with the matrix theory. I get the idea that it's impossible to distinguish what is reality and what is not. But the idea that nothing can be fact or nothing is provable is, in my opinion, a false philosophy. Truth is relative, all of which will basically stems from knowledge by direct acquaintance.
