In the UK it used to be completely free, and you used to get a grant on top of that for living expenses I think. Now you get a loan (£3,000 a year for me) and have to pay tuition fees. It means I'll finish normal university with a debt of around £10,000; after I've done post grad, probably a lot more if I don't win a grant.

It's a shame things are like this now, but without tuition fees I expect universities would be flat broke and then I wouldn't be able to find a job at one, so I guess I can't complain much.

still, i think caps should exist. it stops fatcats at the top grabbing huge wads, and it limits budgets, making them spend more wisely.

That's the problem here IMO. As with many aspects of American Gov't I think that the spending is out of control. To go from $19/credit (my college years) to over $100/credit (at present) in 20 years is ridiculous. What do you know that is more than quintuple it's value in that time? I mean besides bottled water...

I hope we get our taxes back up. With lower taxes life in the country is more and more about only taking care of yourself.

There aren't ever going to be caps. Any government that is in wants to make money. Plus, if they put caps, many big rich companies are going to get mad at what they're doing, and they'll lose lots of support.

The rich want to stay rich and.. they will.

In The Netherlands the universities have no tuition (and there are no plans for this, I believe). We also have no student selection (like Oxford or Harvard?) but certain studies do have a student 'cap' based on grades (I for example study medicine which -depending on the university- only allows a maximum of 300-400 students each year).

Student receive so-called 'study-financing' for about 4-6 years (depending on the length of your study) and we also receive a card to use public transportation for free. You can also take an additional loan (because the study-financing isn't that much) which you will of course need to pay off. If you finish your study within 8-10 years then the study-financing debt will be cleared; there are plans to make studying very (like 5 times more) expensive if you do not finish your study within a certain amount of years.

Depending on your situation you'll get about €200-400/month of study-financing which isn't much considering that a room costs about €200-300, insurance about €70-100 and college about €150 a month, leaving out no money for food :P

Thing I do like about the Netherlands is that the qualities of the universities is high but also there's isn't much variation into this. There are no real 'elite'-universities around here so social class and bank account will not get you better education!

Rooms in Calgary have skyrocketed 40%+ in the last year alone because of the oil boom here in Alberta. It's absolutely insane.

2 months ago I completely lucked out and basically have the entire basement of a house (kitchen is upstairs, but good roomies), complete with my own room, bathroom w/ shower, laundry (new HE machines too!), and a very large den + utils, 7mbps hi-speed, cable and phone for the insane price of $550/month.

In most parts of this city a place like this would run well over $1000 bucks.

<---- Super lucky man

You should ask the man if he's willing to sell the thing.

A friend of mine at DeVry here in Calgary pays just under $16,000 per year because of no government help.
That's because those universities don't adhere to whatever specification your government sets. This gives the university more freedom but the students a big bill. I found this College called QANTM which is about game development but then I found out it was a private school and I was like :(((((((((((((((((( as it costs €13k for 18 months.

Government pays my tuition fee's and out the kindness of their own hearts gives me the full loan & grant of nearly £6k a year...of which £4.5k is payable back.

So I'll come out of this with £15k+ in debt because god damn that money is getting spent on something! I spent most of last years loan on rock climbing gear, this years is PC parts (woo for another 19" widescreen TFT soon) and next year probably does go to Uni stuff.
