4th edition can blow me. What the fuck is the deal with that shitty alignment system. I mean, seriously?

What is the difference between AD&D and D&D? Is AD&D just another way of saying second edition? I have always wondered and I figured a DND thread would be a good place to ask.

PS
Newer editions suck, overpowered heroes = fail

AD&D was just another product line released I think.

Way back when, there was D&D. Very few rulebooks... it was basic. It caught on. A new set of rules and shit expanded on that, and became known as AD&D(Advanced Dungeons and Dragons).... Somewhere along the line, all that got tossed out the window, and it's back to being called just "Dungeons and Dragons."

It pretty much went

D&D
AD&D (more rules, more tables, more "if-thens")
AD&D 2nd Ed.
D&D 3rd Ed. (and this is where we make the numerical leap)
D&D 3.5 Ed. (and this is where we make the logical leap)
D&D 4th Ed. (at least they're consistent)

Heroes have gotten steadily more powerful, with more options at their disposal. If you want your PCs to di--er, feel the lingering threat of mortality, play AD&D or the first edition. Once 3e came out, PCs became (super)heroes.

That's cool by me. Playin' a "real" hero is fun and all, but sometimes you wanna be the pick of the litter.

The good news is... there are always other RPGs.

ANYWAY. I'm gonna make an OpenRPG/Somethin' thread. Get on it.

Oh, and Sonic, don't torrent sourcebooks. Asshole.

You mean how there are only four? Yeah I was wondering that myself.

It's... it's really targeting a different audience. It's less for role-players and more for, y'know, people. Regular, stupid people.

Ah well.

With that clarification what I have is a complete set of books for AD&D 2nd edition and a smattering of 1st edition D&D.

AD&D 2nd Edition was pretty huge during the '80s and early '90s. It reigned supreme for over a decade - the content for it is massive.

Yeah I guess it's just dumbing down to try and appeal more to a mass market. I'm not really sure how that can work, though. Tabletop gaming is never going to be truly mainstream. Anyone playing it has to be able to cope with a basic level of complexity. And I don't know of anyone who prefers the 4th edition alignment system. They've basically eliminated the lawful <-> chaotic axis..

5th edition alignment system:GOOD or EVIL.

Wait.............

WHAT?!?!

You mean you can no longer be "Chaotic-Good" or "Lawful-Evil"?! FUCK THAT!

(It may sound contradictory, but we used to have characters like that)

God Damn but someone fucked that game all to shit.

You can still be chaotic good, etc., they're just not defined as such. Or at all.

I took my son and two nephew through my 2nd AD&D edition books tonight. Making them work through portions of the Greyhawk map to find someone that can help them locate The Village of Homlett. Kids that have been weaned on Halo and the like...they really seem to enjoy it. Even after 30 or so years...it seems to hold up well... I even found someone's prefab character sheets on the web to use...not perfect but they work...

omg....AD&D 1st edition was where it was at for me....I still have the books from 1977-1979...they're still in mint condition. Gary Gygax is the MAN.

I had loads of cool adventures with many peeps and the DM was great.

I lived in Utah at the time. I remember watching a news report about how D&D could corrupt small minds and turn good people into bad people....hahaha

My books are SO tattered. It's funny to see the notes I wrote all over them and the scotch tape that I used to try to repair the spines of the books. all these years later it's funny how helpful my notes are inside the front cover for various tables and quick references...

As a side note it was funny to hear my 12 year old son tell his 14 year old cousin to shut up during an encounter as he had a charisma that would make the family dog growl...
