anyone else feel the art direction for SC2 is kinda dumb?

I hate the cartoony aspect of it. i wanted gritty-realistic, like SC1 was trying to be (im talking about starcraft). i hope there's a mod sometim to make it less cartoony.

You're just in denial. The art style is just right imo. It's got the right blend of sci-fi and color.

Trust me, when your playing the game your mind will be fucking blown. It was when I played it at BlizzCon 2007.

Starcraft II won't hold up to the original, to begin. Second, the art direction isn't 'cartoony'. Cell Shade doesn't default to cartoony. Good color choices don't default to cartoony. If anything, the original Starcraft is cartoony. But, even so, who cares about art direction? The hype for Starcraft II, for me, died months after it was announced, when I realized they had taken a lot of the professional-choice units out of the game and replaced them with more 'noob friendly, all-around' classes. Instead of a 'graphics mod', I'm hoping the professional community ditches the new classes and just work on maps that feature the original line up.

im excited for new units. The game's 10 years old, dude. New units are required.

Anyways. Iunno. I like the old art direction better, but you're right, im just judging from screens. Oh, and, i really dislike the Protoss art. it seems like generic weird egyptian. While old SC1 style looks really alien, but advanced. SC2's looks a little generic. Also noticed that the Zerg looks like something straight out of WC3. I hope it grows on me, though

Ten years is irrelevant. What's the old saying? "If it isn't broke, don't fix it." I can't complain, though. Blizzard was intelligent enough to include the original units for players who don't want to use the new overdone ones. .. For custom maps, of course.

Oh, yeah, Protoss is supposed to be alien and advanced. That's the whole point of their race. The code or whatever is to add to their mystery. Zerg, well, that's to be expected. The majority of Starcraft II developers were part of the team that worked on Warcraft.

I really dug the SC1 art style also. The grittiness was great. I really liked the much different looking species. The protoss looked elegant and clean, the terrain looked kind of dirty and thrown together, and the zerg were just...dirty nasty zerg. This looks kind of World Of Warcraftish. I dunno, maybe it will look better in game.

exactly.

Terran looks kinda dumb now. It looks like it was thrown a TF2 filter.

It works for WoW, I'd wager they're trying to draw some of their success from that.

About the units though, when you played against good players, did you bother with multiple types of units or build massive hordes of the most powerful asskickery available and just wipe the map?

depends on the race. If zerg, totally mass. If Toss, lots of different types with a lot of spell casting. With terran, a little bit of both, but i liked nuking people.

I like the new look. I really don't see anything 'cartoony' about SC2. Granted, I just quickly looked at a few screenshots when I saw your post, and I don't remember much from the videos I've seen, except that I thought it looked pretty awesome. However, just so I know what I'm talking about, I'll look at a few.

With your examples, there's a difference because they updated the game. They're able to put more resources into each element, which should, if they know what they're doing, change the look of pretty much anything. It may not change the look 100%, but it should change it. Because if they didn't change a thing about it, then we'd all complain about how they didn't change anything. The cybernetics core looks a bit more updated to me than anything else.

Meh, it's an RTS. They have to make it look good with as few resources as possible and this is how they do it.

I'm just glad that they didn't completely run D3 through the WoW filter.

I know where people are coming from when they disagree with the 'cartoony' art. I didn't know if it was that or the way the models were shaded/rendered.

Yes, im not complaining about the actual 3D quality, which is actually quite beautiful. But, the art direction, i think, is a huge departure from SC1, and doesnt make much sense, imo. Why would the Protoss change their entire style of buildings? After the Brood War, did they think it was outdated or something? Look on the page of the Probe. I think the Starcraft Ghost model of the Probe looks best. SC2 looks like some weird blueish blob of metal

How the hell do they look different, besides the increase in quality?

Sure, they look more tan then yellow, and theres very few differences in the models (most of which look like 100% conversions), like the Fleet Beacon missing it's little stick on the left side, but it's not game breaking, actually still good imo.
