What do I need to buy to play FF?

Nothing. All you need is a valid Steam account.

Fortress Forever requires the Source engine mod base, which can be downloaded from Steam for free.

You will have to download "Source SDK Base 2006" before you can play. This can be found in your Steam library in the tools section. This can be quite a large download if you don't already have a Source game (such as Half-Life 2) installed.

And for God's sake, make sure the mod's folder is named FortressForever and placed at: Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\ before you come here saying that FF doesn't work.

n00b question

on my account (tools section) i have:

source sdk base (installed)
source sdk base - orange box (not installed)

Whats the diference between the 2 sdk bases?
Will the orange box work for FF
would the orange box one be better than the other one?
or they are 2 completely different files?

The difference is when Valve released TF2 they also released Episode 2 which had an upgrade to the source engine (orange box) if you have "sdk base" installed it will be fine.

in answer to your questions:

they are two completely different sets of files

ff only works on the regular Source SDK Base.

orange box is better (we are working to move to orange box)

source SDK allows you to make maps and do some other things for all source/orangebox based games
