Fckin, port dis shit to the Cube 2 engine. Wait, that's a month older than the original Source Engine.

Damn, I still play Cube 2: Sauerbraten. Still don't know how to spell it without Google-ing it first though. I learn C++ by editing it's source files.
Still stuck trying to work out how to save to a .cfg through C++ though.

The only real modern engine's that work well with FPS's are the Unreal Engine and the Source Engine. That's it.

Doubt you're gonna find a good open-source FPS engine.

Only other way round it is making your own engine.
Don't think the FF dev team are quite up to that level yet. :L

you're joking right?

any quake engine, or derivatives like qfusion, ioq3 etc are the pinnacle of FPS engines. C4 Engine, even torque3D (which is now open source) of tribes 2 fame does pretty well..

But Rage is about 20 Gb, and the Rage SDK is about 30 Gb.

I thought the Rage SDK wasn't a real SDK in that it doesn't support mods, anyway? I'm probably wrong, but y'know...

Also, yeah, I mentioned Unreal and Source, because they're the only AAA engines I know of that work well nowadays.

All those other engines prolly work as well, but as I'm noobish noob at older games, and only really started looking at engines a year back (while I learn C++), I didn't really know about them. I mean, I knew fckin Quake exists, but. Didn't really know people still use it's engines.

Also (unrelated to anything ever), I found out why there's so few servers on the Desura version of Cube 2, and it's because the Desura version is outdated.
It's 9 years old, and still getting updates. Damn.
(still unrelated: why everyone always play instagib on sauerbraten, damn community)
(even still unrelated, yet not, maybe: I found a fork of the Cube 2 engine called OctaForge, which is pretty much the same, yet EVERYTHING is coded in Lua. Awesome sauce.)

seems EVERYONE missed this important detail (me included), but you basically can't make multiplayer mods. rage mods can run in 64 bit only, but multiplayer is 32 bit only

yea, quake is deeply rooted. heck, CoD engines are quake tech. not sure but the newest but I bet if you looked deep enough.

Every time i've tried to play cube2 there was blatant cheating brasilians flying around . OctaForge is a blast to mess with tho

Yeah, pretty much every FPS engine is based on some version of a Quake engine.

The original RTCW based CoD deviated quite a bit, but the newer ones seem to just patch in the latest graphics fidelity and technologies, kinda like source.

The anti-cheat is the 'Master' system.

The master (who can be anyone, so long as they choose to be it) chooses the game's setup, and can change the server's gamemode, add bots (depending on server's settings), and change the server's availability.

They pick 'Open', where anyone can join, 'Veto', where the master can over-rule a vote, 'Locked', where new players are spectators only, or 'Private', where no-one can join.

The point of it all is:

It seems really good, and a good anti-cheat (as in there's no anti-cheat at all, but hey, community, use these tools, get the cheaters to sod off), but it's never used.
