Open Request to the Community
First off, I want to say that FF, even in its less-than-perfect state, is exactly what I thought the next generation of Fortress games should be, and I am already in love with the game. This is why I feel the need to make this post; because I want the community to grow as big and as fast as possible.
The thing that stands out to me the most in some of the servers I've joined is the amount of people who are either already telling everybody else the "right" way to play or yelling and calling others "fucking newbs" when they make a single mistake. One round on cornfield this guy was cussing out everybody because the first cap was open but they took the flag in the wrong direction... saying that we "all already played this map in TFC so we should know what to do." While these people may be the minority of the current community, they are certainly the loudest. Since FF is pretty much the underdog in the FF/TF2 competition (and yes, it is a competition for fan base, whether or not we want to admit it) the community needs to be a supportive as possible in order to keep new players coming back for more. If I never played a Fortress game and the first thing I did wrong got me lambasted by some asshole in the server I would pretty much say "screw FF, I'm waiting for TF2." So if you find yourself getting a tad angry in a server just take a moment to calm down and try to help out the new players. Or if you hear somebody flying off the handle because some new player made a mistake, try to intervene and help the new player out. If we want FF to be around for a while, we need to make the pubs a good atmosphere that people will actually enjoy playing in. |

That kind of attitude will put FF in the same state TFC is in.
Knock it the fuck off, people. Try and help newbs for once, or you'll run out of people to play with.

I've already run into people whining "fucktard blocked me!" and such. I usually ignore them, but with virtually all of us trying to learn the new corners and such of these maps....CHILL!!!!

Yeah good post. People should really go out of their way to help newer players, no matter how stupid you think they are.
My fear is that the community will shrink as time goes on and not grow like we hope. It would be an immense shame that all this hard work put into an impressive game will only be seen and played by a few hundred (or less) people regularly. It wouldn't have been so bad if FF had been shit, after all I could have said, "wow this is pretty bad...I think I'll just move on to TF2" but it's actually a lot of fun. That's why I'm hoping the devs come out with the training / tutorial mode asap and keep trying to gain more exposure for an influx of new players. |

Yeah I'm new to the Fortress games and it took me a few incorrect flag runs to get it going to the correct place, but if I see people do it I just kinda laugh and try to get them headed in the right direction. People are willing to listen to you trying to help them if you don't yell at them about it.

LOL, you think FF/TFC is bad? You don't know how many times I've seen people quit CS(S) because of the community. I rarely see people hate on each other, sides the common "omfg noob has the flag", but of course I always tell them to chill! =) You never see that in CS(S).

I agree, when this happens I usually jump in and try to help them out, such as providing directions/leading them to the spot where they need to go.
Every game is going to have those people, but don't let that stop you from having a good time. If you need help, just ask in game or here, and if I'm there, I'd be happy to oblige. |

Add a *h to the end of your name if you're a helpful sort and don't mind assisting newbs.
THAT WAY THEY CAN SPOT US.

I'm nice to newbies etc and want to help anyone out, but this thread won't ever change anything.
This is the internet, get over it. It's not like this is exclusive to gaming. |
