Casbah

It's a damn shame no one is making it. Just wanted to point that out if there's anyone else who likes it like I do, and has the skillz.

I really need to learn how to map.

Yea... I was doing Casbah... I did have a bit done, including one of the yards, however, it still didn't look quite right.... and I had no idea how I could actauly make it more fun to play. I had been having this little layout of a map of my own running about in my head for a while, and decided to see what would happen if I started it a tiny bit, it kept getting better, and now is coming along very nicely (seriously. It is. However, I still know none of you are going to believe me unless you see some screenshots).

So yea... if someone wants to pick it up, be my guest.

yeah, not to be a jerk, but you've started and stopped like 5 source related projects.

Three... to be exact. It's ok though. This is just something I am doing to practice level design.

Many mappers pick up and drop maps. I've got one I'm seriously working on, 3 that are waiting for FF entities (essentially complete) and maybe 2 or 3 more that I fully intend to finish, I'm just not inspired to right now (and some have been that way for months).

It is hard to sustain creativity for one map. When you work on two or three maps with different themes, your creativity flows between them. On one day I feel like making fortressy battlements, and on another I feel like making a horror-filled house for Obsidian Conflict. This way I don't get frustrated, and I learn many things.

Things I learn while mapping on FF maps I take elsewhere, and visa-versa. For me its about enjoying making art, and creating a fun, playable map. In that order.

If there are some dead maps along the way, it doesn't matter because all that means is I have learned from them.

understood. but if it's just for practice then don't tell the community you are making it: that might preclude someone else who would possibly complete it from ever undertaking it to begin with.

Yea, that's the reason I dropped Casbah.... it was no fun, and I was not inspired, with the current map I am working on, it's the exact opposite, I have a lot of creativity involved, and I am very inspired from different sources (including maps seen on this forum... don't worry, I am not going to blatantly copy a map).

i'm all for copying the initial layout of the areas. it's what preserves scale. from there you can much more easily change the features of the map and add the details in

Eh, I never really liked Casbah that much. Plus I don't have the textures.

Unless I wind up moving back to Bothell/Seattle sooner than I planed OR unless I'm struck by the best idea evar I'm probably not going to start any more maps untill FF comes out and I can finish all the ones I started.

At least not for FF.

I love the map, if only for aesthetics and originality. But it needs more ways into the bases, its too easy to camp if you've got 10 players that are halfassed, muchless the 20 and 30 most pubs usually have.

I'm trying some new stylistic things.. using displacements in new ways to see if its pretty, opening up the map some more, making it slightly more realistic (you dont 'fall in' to your spawn anymore). I have yet to change the layout, but i can distribute what i make and the community can decide whether we want to mix it up (add other routes, etc).
