I finally had a failure on my 5 year old system on which I have been performing upgrades periodically. Let's face it...you can only do so much with a system that was near max with a Barton core 2800+.

I rebuilt with a new Intel based board, system, 8600GTS and.....Vista Ultimate. I just installed Oblivion and set it to Ultra high detail....holy CRAP! HDR in Oblivion? Crysis is installing now...better get some kleenex...

Moved to Tech - more about your rig than other games. And please nevar forget the rule about "One brag about your system thread per person". d:

But yeah, that rig sounds sweet except for the Vista Ultimate part. Since you are a pretty hardcore gamer, please keep us posted as to what works with Vista and what does not. The many complaints of gamers (FPS drop, for one) is one of the major reasons I am not upgrading anytime soon, and I would love to hear which of those complaints you personally have to face.

Moving from my old system to this was was a night and day difference. Crysis is beautiful but I suspect that even a top tier system would choke on it at top detail levels. At medium settings the game is still nice and fluid.

On Vista I've played HL2, C&C Generals, RA2 and a few others so far. I, honestly, can't give you a fair comparison between Vista and XP as I don't have XP installed on this system yet. I'm not at all certain that I will really. I'm happy with the jump...I'll work on performance tuning in the coming days. I will say that moving from my old Western Digital ATA100 drives to Sata2 is a MAJOR difference!

Eh, 8600GTS isn't the best card for the money, but it has DX10. Vista is still a total resource hog, you'll notice better performance with XP. RAM, processor?

DX10 was part of the consideration. For 150.00 it was a good card. Middle of the pack. I'm running 4GB of 800 MHz DDR2 and an 3 GHz E6850 C2D. It's not that fastest there's ever been but it doesn't break the bank and gets me happily running the new games.

I almost spuged as well when I saw HDR for the first time. I saw it in HL2(Lost Coast), and it totally blew me away!

As far as games go, I'm not running into any problems with my new rig(w/ Vista Home Premium)...but I have had some issues with software for some of my devices(Scanner and Printer).
