To any clans participating in the upcoming 5vs5 (and lacking players), i'm certain there are a number of people around here like me, who can't really do the whole clan thing anymore due to time constraints, but would certainly fill in from time to time as mercenaries.. maybe there could be a thread or a list or something on the UGC forums with names of volunteers, their fav class, timezone etc.

Of course all that'd have to be cleared with league rules first (mercs yes/no, max number etc).

well as is stands now the day and time are up for consideration so if your interested you should post your input on the forums...right now there is only one suggestion, but if we get more we can actually discuss it and vote and all that fun stuff...

with reguards to merc / ringers I'm not sure that would have to be discussed, but it's a good idea.

I like the ringer idea for a startup 8v8, but for 5v5 I think it could be a bit too much. One leet O ringer in a steel ladder match could complete change the outcome of a match in 5v5.

The ringer would be cool but personally I think any back up/alternate players should be listed ahead of time. That keeps things fair and honest. If I thought it was going to be really a close match. I could persuade a top notch player to play this one time that normally doesn't have the time to league which would give my team the advantage, unless the other team did the same thing.

For every clan that does not sign up for UGC 5v, you take a year off the life of FF.

Please, think of the community.

I'll be trying my damndest to get more clans involved.

Part of the problem, though, is that many TFC players don't see the difference and simply don't feel like they should upgrade. This is enforced with the leagues still having TFC being played.

There is a reason TFC has been slowly dying over the years. It hasn't changed. FF, while the core of the game is very much the same, much of the mechanics, speed, and other crucial elements are very different. That, coupled with a smaller learning curve in regards to many of the specific elements of the game, make it a completely different beast.

If I ran any of these leagues I would stop my TFC league and start up an FF league, starting the FF league first and putting a time limit on the TFC league, with the ability for a smooth transition from TFC to FF in this period. This is how most leagues handle it when new games come out and I don't see why it has not happened here.

Possibly because not all leaguers own computers capable of playing Source games. Ok, some could call that a "stretch", but it's really not. If my previous machine hadn't taken a total dump on me, I'd still be using it, and TBH, probably have problems playing Source games. I have many older systems, and the absolute IRONY here, is that my Commodore 8-bit and Amiga machines STILL work, but not a single one of my Winblows machines, prior to the one I am currently using, function properly. Guess they don't build them like they used to.

That's fine. You could say the same thing about Quake. Why are there no leagues for that game anymore?

What about Doom or Doom 2?

Quake 2?

Age of Empires 1 and 2?

Command and Conquer? Red Alert? Red Alert 2?

Call of Duty 1? 2?

People should either suck it up or get out of competitive leaguing. I don't see what makes TFC exempt from this process. It's been relevant for every other game, INCLUDING previous TF games. Why is it not relevant here?

The problem is that b/c UGC is not affiliated with FF, TFC, or any TF games for that matter, it's not really up to us to determine weather or not a game is dead.

We will continue to host leagues as long as there is an adequate player base to play. Removing the TFC league in favor of FF would just anger people and cause a black mark against UGC in the eyes of the community as a whole. And probably wouldn't serve any proactive purpose.

I honestly think with time more members will migrate on their own...I am in contact with several clans and am attempting to convince them to migrate over to FF, so we'll see!

It's irrelevant if a game is dead or not. Every other game on the planet has leagues that adopt, and eventually require, all league participants to have the latest content or to ship off.

The TF community is an incredibly small niche. Nobody worth their salt is going to go back to HL to play competitively in a fortress style game. There is TF2 which looks and plays much more smoothly.

It's fine if there are two, three, four, eighteen, three hundred games that a league has. You'd be hard pressed to find any leagues that still run Quake leagues. Why? Because QUAKE 2 EXISTS. Any leagues that do exist have very few members and don't play ever.

There is a reason why Quake 3 and 4 are played more than Quake 1 and 2. There is a reason why Call of Duty is not played in leagues and CoD2 and 4 are (3 is exempt from this as it did not come out for PC... however, if it had nobody would be playing CoD2).

There is a reason why leagues and competitions for SC include the expansion.

There is a reason why TF is no longer played competitively on Q1,2 or 3 and is slowly dying in HL. I'll give you a hint. It's not because the game is boring.

Ironically, I've actually seen quite a lot of people come back to TFC since FF/TF2s release because it didn't live up to their expectations but I highly doubt people will just get up and quit TFC, they've come to love it and will play for years to come imo, even if their PCs use nuclear energy to power their ubarnezz.

Also, I'm one of those "lololdpc" people, it runs source with 40fps however each and every time I load FF my comp explodes, be a long time yet before I can play FF competitively :'(

Hey Wet Mule, have you tried scaling down your settings with one of the 'high fps' configs? It did make FF playable for me (not more than 40 - 50 fps, admittedly)..

I think edge is basically saying that the leagues don't have to disappear entirely and immediately, just most of them do. ie. Take away the small team TFC leagues and that'll bring them to FF (seeing as we're currently 5v5 anyways) or kill them.

I agree, but that isn't really my call. I'm just a peon in the UGC world. We really need people to post that on the UGC Formus and get the TFC admins talking about it to make any real progress.
