So you'd rather run a game on bare minimum reqs instead of above recommended?
Sure XP is great but I really enjoyed my switch to Vista, it has given me zero problems and I think people are too harsh on it. However, I have 2 gigs of RAM so if this "RAM hogging" I hear of is true, it's not apparent to me.

running XP on my main pc, and ubuntu on my laptop. i cant run ubuntu on my main pc for two reasons:

- ubuntu does not yet have an EASY way of getting raid to work.
- maudio refuse to write linux drivers for my sound card... wankers

i'm going to sit tight with XP on my main pc until linux is viable for it. i'm also going to try out xubuntu on my laptop i've ran fluxbox with debian before, and it rocks.

In the interest of not upgrading my PC every 2 weeks, I've given up on PC gaming pretty much.

Well that's not actually the reason. I'm on a laptop so I can have all my shit at my moms home or my dads home or school etc. etc., and about 2 years ago every new game trumped my system requirements, so it's got nothing to do with gaming anymore. I have a 360 for that.

The "So you'd rather run a game on bare minimum reqs instead of above recommended?" was to question your belief that if something is not broken you shouldn't fix it.

And the point they were making is that upgrading to Vista doesn't "improve" or "fix" anything. For every positive feature Vista has it also has a negative.

For example:
Positive: "Vista can support more RAM than XP can!"
Negative: "Vista uses double the amount of RAM of XP!"

Positive: "Vista has a repair environment for fixing OS problems on the fly!"
Negative: "Vista doesn't have a repair reload option and the automated repair never fixes anything!"

If your Vista installation gets corrupt you are reloading it, period. No more repair installs no nothing.

What are you talking about? I did a repair install about 1 month ago.

So the only difference between Ubuntu and Xubuntu is the different window manager?

No you didn't do a repair install. Vista doesn't have it. Vista has an automated process which claims it is a repair install but it is in fact not.

XP had a true repair install that was a life saver for a lot of people. It deleted all system files and replaced them and sometimes saved a lot of time and effort. In some cases you could go on as normal after a repair install.

Vista just goes through replacing system files until it boots and checks for file corruption that it caused itself. Do you see the problem here? You end up getting different versions of the files that were supposed to be together. Even worse Vista is going to download the updated version, that probably caused it to crash to begin with, again in the next few days if not instantly.

Yup, best to use an exteranl tool, because Vista and repairing don't go togheter indeed!

Well of course not. Because you have 2 gigs. Vista hogs one of those gigs.

You shouldn't attempt to fix it with something that lowers performance, no.

I don't have any beef with vista. It seemed pretty cool on my friends computer, but personally I can't afford it just now :--D

I don't feel like paying for a new operating system. Already tried it but I'd rather wait until I get a new computer so I can get Vista on the cheap, as it were. I've always been paranoid about cracking/bootlegging Operating Systems, for reasons I'm not sure. I like automatic updates and I would love to have those updates without scrounging around forums and shady crack websites just to incorporate those new updates/features.

As for gaming-wise, I'd rather wait until the newer dx10 cards come out, because the current ones don't do so well in dx10 compared to their performance in dx9. I don't even think 2 8800s can play Crysis on High + a decent high resolution and have a stable frame rate. Don't quote me on that though. Even then I really don't give 2 shits about DX10 because most of the effects are barely noticeable, to me at least.
