Streaming films from computer to my TV?

I'd quite like to watch films from my computer on my TV, which is in the other room, so a TV-out cable would be quite a stretch (and i've never managed to get one of those working anyway..), does anyone know what the current technology is like for this sort of stuff?

E.G. TVs with ethernet which can browse my computer over the network?
Some sort of ethernet to TV-out gismo? some sort of long video-out cable? Ideally I could watch youtube and stage6 etc too.

My TV had a VGA cable plugin in the back- had a spare computer laying around the house and connected that to it.
I guess you could use like 20 VGA extenders.. GL?

I use a combination of

I've downloaded tons of youtube movies and clips, and watch them on my tv. Really fun, you can even learn things too.

Cool videos:

I had an old PC lying around, hid it behind the TV and put it on my LAN. I use VNC to access it and also have a wireless mouse/keyboard attached.

I know this is old, but I finally installed MediaPortal and it's amazing and easy to set up. I still want to do some customizations, worth using

I was going to send you a link to MediaPortal. I've never used it but my old boss used to talk nonstop about how uber he was for using it. I could probably run it like I had been using it for years because of that. Keep in mind this is one of those guys that gets excited when he learns how to do something new every day but never learns to shut up.

Does your computer have an SVideo out port? It's a fairly small port, on most laptops, dunno about desktops, most people ignore it. If it does, you can buy a cable to do this.

The program is a Media Center front-end. It's just like Window's Media Center.

You install it on a computer hooked up to a TV and set it up to read media from where ever it is.

i agree with scuzz. S-Video works fine. thats what i use. However if you just a sright S-cable, then you wont have sound, just video only. You'd have to get a cable that has sound connectors on it as well. For something decent it will cost ya a few bucks to, especilly if ya need alot of length. I have a 16ft s-cable, no audio connectors ( tv is only 5ft away) and that slone will run ya about $20.

I just use a standard "Y" cable for sound. It goes from earphone-jack to your standard A/V sound
