Fortress Forever Versioning..

A clan member recently brought up a good point in a clan conversation about FF and I was wondering if I might get some feedback from the dev team on this. They are worried that with the current fluiditic nature of the source code that it'll be easy for individuals to have older dlls or hacks that would allow unlimited speed, or a difference in bhop rules from one player to the next. Will there be any "required matching" of versions upon the first public release of the game?

Correct me if I'm wrong. But If you don't update a mod and you try to connect to a server it doesn't work.. Plus speed hacks work by sending out different synchronization infomation to the server

I know that Hidden has had several updates that we didn't apply and were able to have everyone connect no matter what their version was. Same thing with TFC, not all servers update all the time, but clients do.

True, sometime things updates are for servers only. I think he was talking about client side updates though

K, I guess it just depends on where the rules for movement are enforced then...

Even from different beta updates it won't let you join the server, say "Server uses different class tables"

I'm not sure what you mean by "fluiditic [sic] nature." If you mean the rolling beta updates, that's because it's still a work in progress. While the SVN system will always exist for testing updates, the actual, mass-released game will be released stand-alone and with specific updates, as normal.

If that's not what you mean, then... man I hope not. At any rate things like bhop will likely be locked in from the get-go, once a good speed is found. Required matching is definitely gonna be in, I can't imagine why it wouldn't.

It all depends. If you add something that changes network tables then everyone will have to have the version that has that change in it. If it's minor changes (especially client side stuff) then you can have a lot of different versions.
