Yeah -- Valve does a very good job with the actual architecture and brush geometry that their maps never feel like they're held together by props.

Also, take a few architecture courses in College or highschool. They have really inspired me to map... too bad my laptop can't really play hl2 . I'll get into the ff scene during the summer and I can't wait. I started by trying to reproduce things I saw in pictures and just self taught/read tutorials to get to where I am today. It takes alot of practice and dedication but the end product is usually worth it.
