I also agree with maintaining this section for FF only.. and moving the other modes to other games section or tf section etc . I do play Tf2 rarely but this is a forum thought on FF imo and Tf2 topics spam the general discussion : |

You've certainly got a good point blip--I really don't want to scare off potential FF players, and this entire community will definitely benifit from being reasonably civil. But yeah, TF2 players are people too..just like Guitar Hero players and disco dancers.

yeah we generally try not to let threads devolve into shitting on TF2 for that reason. obviously TF2 can afford to lose players, so if you have ever seen an FF thread on a TF2 forum, they dont hold back at all (hell look at the TF2Turbo thread on steampowered...).

kubedawg made a thread in the Chat section a few weeks back wtih a TF2 video (fan made). it was pretty funny, and no one took a crap on the thread because it was in the chat section, where (i think) it should be. had this sandwich video been posted in the chat section, it would not have gotten as much crap as it has, but since it was posted in general (a place that is for Fortress MODs [i dont think we need to get into an argument that TF2 toes the line of Fortress gameplay and is not a mod], especially FF) it garnered a lot of unnecessary and negative attention. TF2 threads in Other Games and Chat, they will be just fine, and wont draw people to them whose sole purpose is to crap on TF2 (and hopefully wont draw those few people whose sole purpose is to crap on FF, either).

Seriously, would it really be worth it to have a "Other Fortress Games" section? How many other fortress games are actually played still? TFC, TF2, and that's it. Maybe some oldfags playing stuff like QWTF and TF mods in other games.

It's fine how it is IMO. This section be just for Fortress-related stuff.

I recently upgraded and slapped in another stick of RAM, and now I can run TF2 without my computer crying (OS page memory whatevs warning).

You can see in my Steam profile that I have 6 hours in the game already. I've tried it for like 5 minutes at a time at a buddy's place, but now I've had an opportunity to sit down and play it for a good length of time.

Let's go with Engineer, which is my favorite class. I have like 500 hours racked up as Engy in TFC and FF combined, and one hour in TF2. I get what they were trying to do with the sentry taking a while to build and 8 whacks (1 whack = 25 metal) to upgrade - encourage teamwork. If you want to get a SG up in a hot zone you'll need someone to help cover it while it's going up.

Dispensers are great for healing and resupply, but useless in their defensive "bomb" role. I've tried demolishing my dispenser as a weapon pretty much to no avail. Even if it did work, everyone is always leeching off of the damn thing so it wouldn't do much in the way of damage anyway.

Spy's sapping is complete bullshit. Most Engies build their stuff close together, and any decent Spy is going to sap all of your stuff. You basically have to choose what you're going to lose - and that's if you aren't killed by the Spy right off the bat. Sap = distraction = stabby stabby. I really don't like how one class can get in close and fuck up all of my shit AND kill me in about 5 seconds total. It's not a skill thing, it's a "it took me 5 fucking minutes to get my SG, dispenser, and teleporter working".

Engy tl;dr summaries here and here.

Medic is fun. It takes a good while to build up the uber - I wish you could activate it at any time and have it work proportionally. (If you have half uber, it lasts for 5 seconds). There's been plenty of times where I've nearly had uber and the fucktard I'm healing decides to poke his head out in Snipertown.

Demoman's four pipes are too little - the pipe gun clearly has six, so why the Hell does it only hold four? The pipes do work fairly nicely though and are very similar in functionality to TFC/FF's blues. Sticky bombs are a nice touch but you can't use old demo tricks like downpipe 'cause... well, they stick.

Everything fun about TFC/FF Sniper (speed sniping, for one) is now gone in TF2. I don't even want to get started on the shitty TF2 fov, but the Sniper scope is a real bitch. That's one of the reasons I don't play DoD much, and now I have another game where I don't really want to bother with Sniper.

Scout is a marked improvement, combat-wise, to the previous games. It's fun to crack people over the head with the bat (or any melee weapon for that matter), but melee hit detection is still complete shit in Source - even in one of Valve's flagship games. The lack of "fires in a constant straight line" guns like the nailgun and supernailgun make sapping SGs, ubering, or getting a really fucking lucky shot off as another class the only options for taking down SGs. I do miss the whole "who runs out of ammo first" duels on sentry guns. Double jump can't hold a candle to conc jumping. It's like, Double Jump has this candle, and it just fucking drops it.

Soldier? Rocket jumping is a useless frivolity - it takes so much health (and you go so slow) that it's only useful on the rare occasion that you want to go straight up. I've seen some people use it in combat - get some air and rain down a few rockets - but that's the most useful I've ever seen it.

The game is aggravatingly slow - run speed and respawn timers abound.

I stand by my statement that it's a shitty Fortress game but a good game if you didn't think of it as a Fortress game. I'm currently trying out a bunch of maps and classes, but I haven't really found anything I like enough to play it all day like I can with TFC or Fortress Forever.

And my final answer: fuck you, achievments. Fuck you. My OCD wants to collect them all, but I can fight that. The real kick in the goddamned nuts is that I have to do this trivial shit to unlock extra weapons. I paid for the goddamned game, I don't need a second fucking job. That's why I don't pay to play WoW, a.k.a. World of Grindcraft. If you're going to release shit just let people use the goddamned things right off the bat.

oh, and, the dispenser has a different role now. it dispenses alot faster, but does no bomb damage. At all. But it is good for just blocking doors and shit. one more thing, it is insanely shit easy to deal with spies. hit the sapper once, pull out your shotty, pump a few rounds into him, and hit the sapper again, problem solved.
