Help with Soldiers
Hi guys. I started playing FF again, and I think I'm getting better. But there's always one problem.
Soldiers. Yeah um, any ideas on how to beat soldier? And how to play him too? |

I'm assuming here that you don't play TFC. The Solly in FF is very similar to that one.
Depending on the class you are fighting, you'll need to lead them differently. The faster they are, the more you have to lead them(with rockets). Personally, I like to use the splash affect to bounce them around, then switch to the shotgun(right click) to dish out some damage. Right click quick switches between the weapons(super shotgun/rocket launcher), rather than reload. Reload is automatic. The nail grenade is not very usefull, although what we're working on in the Beta, is. Depending on the range of your target, a frag nade comes in handy while you are bouncing them around.

He's asking how to beat Soldiers, Iggy.
Also, OP, what class are you trying to do it with? Some more details would allow us to better help you.

I usually play Pyro, medic, soldier, and occasionally Heavy.

Try to make him waste his rockets before committing to fighting or running past him. He's only got four and they reload really slowly.
Dodge in and out of his effective weapon ranges. If he switches to his shotty, scoot in a little bit and you might be able to run past or do a lot of damage as a heavy (or even a medic). Once he pulls out the rocket launcher, back off a bit. Use terrain to your advantage.

yup best thing is to count the rockets and run past when he's out of them. Medic usually takes a good grenade and a few direct shots to kill him from full health. But you have to dance around his rockets till he's out - some people just literally throw their rockets away and use shotgun as a last resort.
Thus similarly when you're a soldier its always good to try and keep a rocket back if you can. Do a lot of switching between shotty and rpg. A few shots with the shotty and quick change to a rocket and back again. Don't be too tempted to throw all the rockets away unless you're low on health n won't survive much longer. Don't be afraid of losing some health in order to get some more direct hits with the rockets. Not sure that makes sense. I'm dancing around the same two points.. but I just woke up. |

I've always had trouble with soldiers, with their high armour and huge splash area with no damage falloff. A good soldier can almost totally lock down an area.
I'd advise doing what Raynian and Elmo suggest. Concs can help a lot, and having a teammate (preferably a medic) distract the solly while you slip past might work too. Remember this is a team game. :P |

Class specific
Each class plays differently and has different skill sets. What class do you play most?
i.e. scout - don't dm soldier, fire your nail gun so they don't hear your conc primes and beat him with speed. hw - use your ac and when rockets come your way stop firing, strafe jump to the side and resume firing. Also shotgun can work well. pyro - good luck but try getting him a lvl 3 burn. IC from long range, prime napalm, close the distance and flame thrower him, top it off w/throwgren and badaboom, screaming. medic - nailgun in tight hallway corridors, shotgun and nade combination. or conc past. A good soldier is hard to kill, period. |

That said, it's not much use running a solly O against a pyro D for the same reason, both players will die, or the solly will be soo close to death after the engagement he won't be much use in the enemy base afterwards. Infact if it weren't for the fact that the solly has the stopping power for the scouts and meds, the pyro would be the class of choice if the enemy is running heavier offense against you. But since this is a team game, and if you really want to be usefull for your team, lets say you're on offense the pyro is a great harasser of the solly. You don't have to fully engage him, just harass the hell out of him, it will distract him for your other teammates to accomplish more and there's a good chance you will seriously piss the guy off and cause him to break off from his standard routine just to focus on you, in which case your teammates are really open to take advantage of his absense. Or if you're on defense and sollies are coming O against you, be a pyro near the front of your base. Remember it's a team game you don't need to make the kill, but you'll hurt the solly enough that even if he kills you, he'll have most likely wasted atleast 1 nade, and a couple rockets, and be hurt pretty bad. Making it easy for your teammates behind you to finish him off. Last edited by Hammock; 01-13-2011 at 04:01 PM. |
