The release process

This is not meant to be one of those nagging "When is it going to be done?" questions. What I am curious about, however, is what kind of release schedule Fortress Forever is going to follow, ie:

a) Is it going to be released as soon a possible, maybe with only a couple of maps or incomplete classes, with successive updates later adding new maps and material?

or

b) Is it going to be released all at once, waiting for mappers/modelers and so forth to finish their work?

I guess what I'm looking at is whether it's going to be released rough-hewn, or delayed until it can be completely polished.

The second option, definitely. We want the game to be accessible to new players as soon as it is released -- most casual gamers won't have the patience to stick with an unfinished game until it becomes playable.

i would prefer rough hewn coz then i get to play at least something tfc-esque. plus you feel as though you are helping with improvements if you post a comment like "THE PYRO FLMAE IS CRAP CHANGE IT" and then it actually changes. how cool would you feel!

I must confess I was hoping for the rough-hewn release under the assumption that it would arrive sooner; but on the other hand it seems the modeling and map work is moving alot faster than on other mods, so maybe it will be a non-issue if testing doesn't take too long.

BTW, nice pimphat, Billdoor.

The fact that each members of the staff has a wide knowledge of tfc since they are all TFC players or were... helps the mod. Since it's "not entirely made from scratch" ( It's not like someone trying to make something original like uh.... midgets with lightsabers vs. frogs with rocket launchers. ). The staff are Ex-Tfcers , they know what they are doing ... unlike some other mods. Anyways... the fact is , it's going to be release when they'll feel it's ready.

There's always beta testing if it needs to be done. But perhaps not on such a mass scale.

Its really vital this mod gets a good reception from casual players on its release. A large number of mods get tried once by a casual player, and dumped because it really wasnt in a good released state. We dont want this to happen to FF.

A year? more? less?

Wheres this game and where can I get it? If George Lucas had used this idea, the latest batch of Star Warz crap would have been much better.

if they release a rough version it would probally hurt the mod more than anything because if you release some buggy POS it will drive away the casual gamer.

It was a different time then. Things didn't have to be pretty or fancy. If it was fun people would play it.

The official response from the mod lead, schtoofa is

Quote:
I would like very much for FF to be released in 05. We'll see if we can pull it off Smile

I will say, though:

1.) Don't quote me on that!
2.) It's more difficult to predict a release date with our team than it would be for a group of full time employees. It's a difficult (but doable) task to calculate/estimate the number of hours required to complete this modification... that doesn't help, though! With full time employees, you often know how much time each week they can spend on a task / project. We all have lives, full time jobs, or are students... so the time we can each allocate to FF varies week-to-week.
