Single dedicated server or 2 VPSs?

Ok all of you tech people out there, lets hear some input.

I lease a single VPS with 1.1 gigs of memory. The server is CentOS linux. On this server I run 7 websites - a mix of wordpress blogs and forums. 3 of the forums are VBulletin.

One forum by itself gets 2,930,856 Pageviews and 125,247 Visitors every 30 days. That equals out to around 6,000 - 7,000 page views every hour. The database is almost 1 gig. Growth is a steady 11% - 15% every 30 days.

The other websites get only a couple of hundred page views daily.

I am thinking of getting a dedicated server and putting all of the sites on it.

Or, should I lease another VPS, with only about 256 megs of memory and off load the smaller sites on it?

If I go with 2 VPSs, I could save about $40 a month, as compared to getting a dedicated. But, as those sites grow, they will outgrow that vps and require a better server sooner or later.

Should I go with a single dedicated server, or 2 VPSs?

I am kinda leaning towards the single dedicated server. This could make it a lot easier then having to keep up with 2 servers, 2 server bills, separate root accounts,,,,

I would say get a dedicated server.
It will also give you a lot more power. However, Dedis are generally a lot more expencive then VPSs. What hosting company were you considering? Servers in Texas tend to be cheaper then other places in the US. Chicago is expencive as all hell.

My hosting provider is Future Hosting, I have been with them for 2 years. So they would be the first ones that I would contact about a dedicated.

The VPS is located in Dallas, and that is where I would want the next server at.

Your issue is not power of the server, but rather bandwidth and power of the db .. thats what takes the hits, not the webserver. If you are running your db locally, I really couldn't give you a valid opinion unless I saw system graphs from the past 30 days. If you are only running webs, and want to save money .. get a managed host with virtually unlimited b/w and storage. The reason for this is because the host db's offsite on heavy servers that can handle that kind of traffic. a VPS or ded server is only if you want to do more than host websites, honestly.

In January and February of 2009, my server transferred 200 and 220 gigs of data. Compared that to only 150 gigs in October of 2008.

My allotted cpu usage runs between 150% - 350%.

Used memory stays between 500 - 800 megs - out of 1.1 gigs.

Keep in mind, every 30 days my main forum grows by 11% to as high as 16%. Its been this way for the past year.

All of the sites are database driven, the forums hit the database pretty hard. The wordpress blogs are not so bad.

Besides my main forum I have a blog that is growing about as fast as my forum. Then there is my wifes forum, my sons forum, and I'am getting ready to move my step daughters forum over to vbulletin and start promoting it.

Managed host?

The hosting provider I am with offers either VPS or dedicated servers.

Ok, I understand what your talking about.

Three years ago I started out with a 1&1 shared server, like what you linked to. In 3 months I outgrew it.

I sent a quote off to sales at future hosting. Their entry level dedicated server is around $139. Thats a dual core intel chip with 2 gigs of memory, Linux OS.

I just wanted to update this thread with the decision my wife and I made.

The base dedicated server starts at $139 - that is with no management and no Cpanel. With those 2 added on its an extra $70 a month. So the actual cost of a introduction level dedicated server is more like $200 a month. That is about $120 more then what paying right now.

My wife and I decided not to go that route because of the cost. We can lease a VPS with 384 megs of memory for about $49 a month, then move her forum and Koreys forum to the other VPS.

Beside those 2 sites, I will probably off load at least 1 wordpress blog and another forum using SMF.

Going with the 2 VPS option, we save $70 - $80 a month, as compared to going with a single dedicated server.
