Need a little help for my map
Ok here's the deal. There's a pipe in my map and it's made out of too many brushes right now cause I want it to look nice and curved and it's probably taking way too much resources so I was wondering if anyone could remake it the exact same way but as a model?
I uploaded the hammer file with the pipe in it so you can have a look at it and build it the exact same way. I figured it could take like 10 minutes for an experienced modeler compared to a couple hours for me so I would really appreciate it. Of course I'll give credits in the nfo. Could you throw up a screenshot? It may be possible to make the thing out of displacements.

It's for source ff_3floors.
I wouldn't know how to do the exact same pipe with displacements and I haven't found tutorials on it. It would probably take me the same time to learn modeling and do it as a model than mess around with displacements to create that. Here's a screenshot, it's just a pipe, easy model no? |

Yeah I've seen that tutorial but it's not good for what I need. You only get the outside of the pipe using that method.
I need the inside too, and it needs to be merged at 180 degree with the outside creating an edge with a width just like in the screenshot above. It has to be possible to walk through the pipe while standing up. |

The subdivide way is the shitty and lazy way. What you end up with after using subdivide sucks dick. Just look at that "tutorial" that someone posted. Holy fuck ass, that shit sucked.
What you're wanting to do is pretty simple shit, though. I would show you the shit, but I'm not on my shit right now and I won't be for a few more hours. So, shit? If no one has shown you by the time I get back, I'll whip my dick out on your forehead. |

So, what are the dimensions of the shit? What's the radius of the outside edge, and how thick is the wall?
I'm guessing the outside radius is 256 units, it's 32 units thick, and it's got 8 sections per 90 degrees? editieid I didn't know how long it was gonna take you to reply, so, I just went ahead and made it based on those dimensions. www.trepid.net/files/shax_pipe-VMF.zip Annnd, that took like... exactly 13 minutes to make. I was saving that shit as the oven timer was going off, it was fuckin' magical. So, you can realize this way is still easy as fuck. Fuck subdivide for this kind of shit. People who use subdivide for this kind of shit are worthless. And now I'ma jizz on this pizza, cause I like food. Last edited by trepid_jesse; 11-17-2006 at 09:28 PM. |

Jesse, you did the inside and the outside of the pipe, but not the front and the back and I really need that.
I could probably use the same technique to make the front and back as displacement too but I'm thinking that a model would have been alot easier. But what do I know about models. |

Thanks for the link Bum but right now I don't have the energy to look into models or anything. It'S already hard enough for me to finish map, I can't waste hours messing around with models or anything. So if anyone want to do the exact same pipe I posted as a vmf as a model and ship it to me then that would be pretty cool, otherwise I'll just wait until everything else is done in the map and see if I still got some desire for a better pipe or not.

There's a pipe cap model in HL2 somewhere. I don't know if it matches your dimensions though.
If you want to try to make it out of displacements WITH the ends of the pipe, just play around with displacement tools with 'spacial' unchecked. It is possible to move everything by exact units so you can eventually nudge everything into place. I'd use one displacement (or 2 4) for the outside and one end, and another one (or another set of 2 or 4) for the inside and other end, if you need that end too. The textures would wind up getting a little bit stretched unless the pipe's length was a multiple of 7, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. All the arches that aren't part of the rafters in this screnshot are basically made that way (except they don't have an 'outside', of course). |
