Improving Boot Time
Any recommended links for improving boot time?
Booting into xp (64-bit) takes forever... but everything else is fast as hell... |

Windows just does that after a while, not sure why. I think it's related to the size of the registry.

Other than the above, getting a Solid State Drive...?
Writing speed on SSD's suck, though... I think...

To help tweak my system I use the info at http://www.blackviper.com It suggests services that you can shutdown to not only help speed up windows in general, but less services to load up the faster it should load.
Its been a great help. |

I wish there was some way to tweak the load time for Windows PE.

When I replaced my IDE drive with a SATA drive, my boot time went from 2 minutes to 30 seconds.
So on the off chance you still have IDE and not SATA, that's one chokepoint you can cut off if you have the money. You can also reduce your boot time by 3-5 seconds by going into your BIOS and making sure that your computer boots directly to hard drive. Most BIOS have a default setting of checking the CD-ROM and floppy first before checking the hard drive. Moreover, you can make sure that quick boot is enabled in your BIOS.

All SATA.
Bios are fine. I have it set to auto log in. It logs in right away... but takes a VERY long time to get from the time it logs in to the when the computer is usable. HDD and RAM is not an issue. |

I have a Vista basic machine I've built up at work for testing development stuff that boots in about 10 seconds...once it's past the BIOS activity.

My laptop with a 1.2 GHz P3 and 512 Ram loaded 10 times FASTER then my desktop with quad core and 4 gigs of ram... Something is clearly wrong. Waiting a min or two for a boot is fine, but I'm getting over 5 min for a boot... something is wrong.
It might have to do with network drivers. Network conactivity doesn't start start right away. I always get a network as programs are starting up... |
