Sins of a Solar Empire.
I don't think I've ever played a better 4X game in my life. It's the perfect mix of 4X and RTS.
I'm also super impressed by the file size and price. About a gig and only $40 for a new release. I also like their stance on DRM I.E. it sucks dick. The scale of the game is epic both in the time it takes to play a game and the actual scale of it all. The 4X aspects of it all is simplified to make the RTS portion of it manageable and easy. The best part of the game is the scale. Your smallest game will take, usually, up to two hours. The largest games will probably take a few months to finish. Yeah, a few months. The tech tree is on the smaller size (compared to, say, Civ games) but it suits the game perfectly, allowing for quick decisions on what you want to focus on. I'm enjoying the game. A ton. Greatly. Immensely.

I've been looking at this one as well. Haven't bought it yet, but there's a good chance I will when I have the time to dedicate to it. It does look like a great game though.
I also have nothing but praise for Stardocks/Ironclad Games DRM stance Now if only they could find a European publisher. Download is all good, but I'd prefer a proper manual to refer to while playing without being hit with $20-$25 for delivery

It's a fun game. My only beef with it, so far, is that there is no such thing as a 'quick game'. This is fine since it's a 4X, however, it's also an RTS. All the quick setting does is speed it up by about 50% or so .
Manual isn't required, but would help a ton.

eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate. Civilization-type games.
I assume 4E wasn't 'edgy' enough.

It has great tutorials, but a friend of mine had trouble jumping from planet to planet, for some reason. I don't know why as it's as simple as moving a group of units in other RTS. And no, you don't need a manual to play it.
