Welp I'll definitely be there tonight. I was sick Wednesday and missed Thursday because I was playing WoW with a friend I hadn't seen in a long time. No, that's not code for wanking to Circ's avatar.

Tonight is a CTF night and will feature 2mesa3_classic, a map that is very popular in pickup games. Drop in the [AE] server at 8:00 PM EST and let's get some good fragging going!

I'd be interested to know how it goes. It's got almost zero signage (signs don't really flow with the single-color textures) but the midmap seems like it'll be fun to DM in and the battlements are pretty dark for spies. I'll most likely pop by.

It played well for the people who knew the map.

For those who didn't, here are the primary complaints (in no particular order):
  • This map sucks.
  • rtv
  • Where the fuck are the signs?
  • Where the fuck is the cap point?
  • Was the original textured like this?
  • Where the fuck are the signs?
  • Fucking pit this map is shit
  • Where the fuck are the signs?
I think a rerelease with some touchup, signs, and a very clearly marked cap point are in order. ff_2mesa3_classic_r2?

Addendum: I personally agree that the map is a bit hard to navigate, but overall it's hella fun. Brings back memories, that pit of doom...

Important newz lawls.

Some of the maps are being cut from the rotation. Reasons are listed with the maps being cut.

ff_session (Monday, CTF)
We played it. Half of the people liked it, and half of the people hated it (10 out of 20 people hit rtv, even though I said many times that it was disabled...) It's a good map, but even with the lights it's just labyrinthine - almost as big as ff_flare (also a good map IMO, and also fucking huge. Even though the lights helpfully guide you to the flagroom (one of the most helpful and stylish things I have ever seen in a map), most newbies had a hard time navigating the map.

ff_waterpolo (Tuesday, Sports)
Fucking destroyed my and others FPS. I average 30, I had 6-10 for the entire time on this map with nearly a full server. Damn near everyone (many of whom have much better rigs than me) reported similar problems.

ff_cz2 (Thursday, Command Point)
cz2 is being cut in favor of ff_tiger. Let's let a new map get some fresh air.

A couple maps I am still unsure of at the moment. I love ff_medieval_b2, btu it's lacking some things and one of the doors is fucked. I'll still give it a chance, of course.

Reflection on the other maps that are not being cut:

ff_medieval_b2
I personally love it, but it's not 100% newbie freindly. It is small though, so it is not too hard to learn the bases. Jury is still out on this one.

ff_congestus
A bitch to defend, just like its predecessor - but everyone had fun, and that's what's important.

ff_startec
A few people bitched that "this map sucks", but they shut up and eventually had fun.

ff_push
Chaotic as all Hell, as always. Fun and easy to understand, newbies picked it up fast.

murderball_nyro
Some people complained of FPS drops. I call bullshit. I'm running a fucking RADEON 9250 and 1GB of RAM. When a game has "FPS drops", I'm usually the first one to know it. I didn't experience any problems on murderball_nyro, and unless there's a proliferation of complaints on the matter this one is staying in.

ff_pigskin
Sweet mother of God, this is fun as all Hell. Bastardly tactics developed quickly - piping Scouts across the field, not too bad. Shooting them with the Sniper Rifle so they clear the field in 1.5 seconds - a bit of a bitch. That's when we started forming an all-Fatty defensive line. 8D

ff_myth_b2
Simple and hella fun. Damn near everything works on this map, don't know why it isn' released yet.

ff_stowaway2
Flag room's a bit turtle friendly, but I like this map more than blis_2_fort. It's pretty damn newbie friendly and not all that huge, so it's perfect.

ff_meltdown
I don't remember a whole lot about this map. We'll see next week, but I imagine it will stay in.

ff_openfire
Damn near idiot proof and it was the shit, of course.

ff_cornfield
ff_palermo
ff_cz2
ff_dustbowl

Fun, I'm sure, but I missed AvD night. (I also missed Wednesday's CTF, but I had experience playing the other maps prior and it was worth commenting on for the nature of this post.)

ff_pirates
Pirates goes to shit real fast if the teams are not balanced. 2 on 1 and the enemy racks up a score real fast. Best part - dumping 82694 into the water. Worst part - 82964 dumping me into the water.

ff_flag4sky
Congratulations, this map is more Machiavellian and insidious than ff_dev_ctf. (The testers and devs will be amazed at this statement.) Going for double caps, triple caps... stealing the flag from your foes... all good parts of a four way map. Add in the element of falling off the platforms and it just gets sweeter. For those of you who missed it, for shame. You totally lost out on one of the best FF matches I have ever played.

ff_dropdown
A great map as always. A bit easy to turtle IMO, and I think it's a bit more slanted towards league than pub play, but it's a good map nonetheless and no one really had any problems n
avigating it. A favorite among many of the people there.

ff_2mesa3_classic
See above post.

So, what now?

I need submissions for new maps. I will be researching it myself, but I'd love suggestions.

We need one CTF map and one sports map. Here are the criteria:

1) Not too diffuclt to navigate
2) Not already part of the Night Fights rotation (or previously a part of it)
3) Not a dev map - aardvark, crossover, etc.

Any suggestions, post 'em here. If not, I'll just find something to fit in and see how it plays.

Haha, thanks for the feedback. I didn't add the signs because they are generally a pain (gotta redo every single one when you flip the base when using overlays) and there are about 30-40 signs needed per base. I wanted to get the map done as fast as possible and move on, and, for my purposes, signage was not a huge priority. I don't see myself revising the map in the future, but I will release the source vmf (been meaning to do this for a while) if anyone else would like to.

Hmm, just a thought, but for a little more variety, why not have one of the nights a requests night?

Something like, set up a poll with 10 maps, and the top 4 get played. Then, next week, 10 other maps (or replace the ones that won last week, or something) etc. etc.

Might be a good way to find out what maps are popular/work well, and maybe put them into regular use on other nights?

Meh, probably sucks, but it's an idea

I like it but as you can see by this thread only a few of us that post will be forming that poll.

There is a plugin called map rater that I haven't been able to get to work with FF yet. I'll check into it some more.

But that would mean I'd have to replace one of the nights I likes.

Maybe we'll expand to Saturday.

For now though, we keep it tiny. It's growing, for sure and it's only been two weeks.

That aside, we do terribly need a map idea to replace session on Monday... CTF, non-dev, not already on the list or has been on the list before.
