Dustbowl...I don't get it
I played a good amount of TFC several years ago, and I always thought this was due to outdated map design or mechanics, but what is with the love for dustbowl?
I don't understand the fun/popularity of this map. It really shows all the weaknesses of the grenades mechanic and doesn't seem to offer anything I can't get out of a good CTF map. I know there's an entire niche community dedicated to dustbowl. Why? What is this about? It seems to play terribly in TFC and FF. |

Your team runs in one direction (usually) so it feels sorta like a team effort.
On a pub, it is a pure Run-N-Gun spamfest DM. No set positions or really even set classes or duties - it's a big free-for-all. |

Dustbowl is my personal favorite map and heres why;
-In dustbowl *TFC (less noobs then FF so cant compare the two yet), both teams are one hundred percent dedicated to the cause. Ive never seen a CTF map where an entire team is so devoted to accomplishing their objective. Not only that but the action tends to happen at one spot, the line moving foward or backwards or staying put. No other map has such condensed action and carnage. -Every Class is useful and put to the test on dustbowl. Not like some maps where certain classes serve no purpose or are better substituted by another. Also working as a team is really a must on dustbowl. Rarely will one individual player change the outcome of the game. Sure you might cap the flag, but sum1 else might have broken through the fence etc... same for defenders. A division of labor is a must. -Dustbowl is a mega challenge. Holding back the attackers from their sheer will of getting out isnt often possible. Deffenders also need to strategies and come up with new ways of defending, experimenting, is there a perfect strategy for defending that never fails? Does one exist? etc... Engineers and many other classes can use their inginuity here finding new places to place SGs and seeing which work best. Its also an uber challenge for attackers just breaching the gates which may seem an impossible feat at first. |

Spy is best offensive class for dustbowl. It nade jumps very well, and he can get to the flag cap area without being shot by an sg.

Playing spy on defense is so much fun and very effective. First you can tranq people as they go to the flag when the flag is close to the cap, but you can also *easily* get behind the offense and start stabbing people left and right w/o even being exposed (thanks to the disguise stealing). You can also sabotage the SGS that the offense builds to hold the line and then turn them all at once for some good fun. I loved to play defense spy in TFC and now it is just pure awesome.
As for how the map plays now, I think it is much more fun than in TFC. The reduced explosion radius of the grenades cuts down the effectiveness of spam in the entrance a little, in my opinion. So the offense actually has a chance in hell to get out within the first minute or two. I also just love the concept of A/D maps like dustbowl, its like one huge battle for every inch of map, but at the same time each player has their own unique methods and even though things are hectic overall there is still strategy involved. |

The spy is used a lot as an offensive player on this map and one of the lesser known abilities of the scout is that they can remove a spys disguise simply by touching them. It so so funny running around touching everyone that is the same colour as you only to watch the spies get killed by sgs and wonder WTF just happened Try it sometime. P.S. Scouts also disarm detpacks by crouching on them. |
