Hey i'm just wanting to see what you guys think. I personally think that tfc lost a good chunk of its players in the transition from won to steam. What do you guys think?

TFC loses players because of of the age, just like any other game
I dont see why people obsess over trying to find reasons as to why it happens. |

When Steam came out, my key ceased to work (seems like someone made an account with my key beforehand or it was never correct to begin with)
Same goes for some people I know. But I already stopped playing a few months before because I had lost all hope that there would ever be an update that'd be worth the download... |

just no.
I'd say it is the opposite way. maybe some more ppl tried TFC when they were bored of hl/cs and saw it in the small list of games for Steam. There's also a good chance that more oldschoolers tried the game again to see how it is going with the teleports. |

Steam arrived at a time when TFC had been played extensively, I think a lot of players simply couldn't be bothered to reload it into Steam, or were using 'a mates copy of Half Life' and thus couldn't share the key any longer.
Beyond Steam bots killed it for me and the progressive loss of good servers with an Admin to deal with idiot players. |

Recently I have seen many new players appearing and revisiting TFC servers. If anything, the population of TFC is increasing--slowly; from what I have seen, anyway.

I think that steam improved things over WON once the first teething problems were sorted, but a lot of people would probably want to lynch me for saying that. Its an old game, people got bored of it and moved on. Thats about all there is to it.

When WON was shut down, yes there was a massive player loss. Most TFC players didn't make the transition to Steam. (Of course, league players did, even a long time before WON was shut down.)
Afair for CS (and maybe DoD), the VAC module was used to announce Steam to the CS players. But TFC on WON didn't have a VAC module, so a lot of TFC players thought it just died and never knew about Steam. Last edited by o_pizzahut; 02-08-2007 at 01:12 PM. |

I wouldn't say steam alone. Steam is fine actually it's a benefit what with viewing servers and other basic features outside of the game. It was the update with teleporters that ruined for me, but I still play.
In what way do you mean? I'm not entirely sure. People turned their noses up just because of the transfer? Last edited by o_paft; 02-08-2007 at 01:39 PM. |

Steam made it easier for new players to pick up the game. Instead of having to search the net for installers and patches, it was centralized to one area. Even if you were an old school CS player, theres a chance you hadn't heard of TFC, the ads on Steam would have drawn people to it.
I was using Steam long before TFC made the transition, I used to use it to play DoD. Thats where I first learned about it actually, the clan I was in was making the transition. I actually know of quite a few players who didn't bother with the transfer, at first anyways. But eventually, everyone I played with installed Steam and went with the flow and I think TFC is better for it. Age is the killer of TFC, not bots, which are a symptom of its age, nor Steam, which probably contributed to its longevity simply for ease of access. |

TFC was better in WON. HOWEVER, STEAM totally rapes WON in support/updates/market/quality/looks/etc. STEAM > *

STEAM turned into a great system, but I believe that its launch resulted in a net loss of TFC players. The purpose of STEAM wasn't to get more people to play TFC; it was to provide a convenience to game purchasers and players in a way that would be profitable for the company. It's a win-win. I mean, shoot - there are servers sitting there just waiting to distribute to you a game. No hard-copy publishing costs at all! Plus you can get your new game instantly.
IMO a number of other things also contributed to TFC's player base decline, including (in no particular order) the bhop situation, the apparent lack of anti-cheat effort, and that it just became old (although the last argument I put little weight on -- to see why, check out current favorably high CS player counts). I don't think bots killed TFC. Bots became more prevalent in TFC servers because fewer real people played, and it spiraled from there.

If you'd have to qualify the overall impact of bots on TFC, would you say positive or negative. I say neg.
