Crash and black screen

Well today I downloaded 2.1 and at random times the game freezes then goes to black. I can't exit the black screen so I have to restart my computer and this has happened 5 times today. For 2.0 fortress forever worked perfectly. Can someone help me?

post your mdmp file for the dev's. programfiles/steam/#####_steam.mdmp or some shit like that. But from the sounds of it, I would guess your playing alot more than normal and your video card is shitting out on you.

I going to start sounding like a broken record here:

1. Scrub your old video drivers
2. Install new drivers

CRASH PROBLEMS FROM VIDEO DRIVERS
Driver Cleaner Program - NUKE old drivers

Well this is my last suggestion until you post system specs and what you have and have tried cause I don't like guessing at what you have done.Nobody said it was your card he said to scrub and reinstall your drivers for the card two different things.

steam://support/?Issues=*

Did you look for the mdmp file?

Me too... and it would not load 2Fort until I did a driver update. Even if you don't think it will help - User driver cleaner to get rid of old drivers then install new drivers. It should be the first step in trouble shooting.

Same thing just happened to me. I first loaded up FF after dling ksour, then went into a listen server and fucked around for a bit. I quit that, then joined another server with a few people in it that were on ksour as well, played till map time ran out, then I joined the gass chamber server which was on aardvark, and I got the black screen + hl2 error.

I'll try updating my drivers, but this is starting to look like a reoccurring issue.

Weird, that system requirements test said that I needed drivers from July 20th, 2006.

Also, I have this problem, but my drivers are from two years later.

Be sure to use driver cleaner. Follow their instructions for uninstall/reinstall of drivers. THEN install the latest drivers.

ATI:
1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove ATI driver from add/remove programs then remove the control panel from add/remove programs
3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
5. Navigate to device manager->display adapter->uninstall and/or remove ATI display adapter but do not reboot
6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
8. Run Driver Cleaner
9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
10. Install the new drivers and control panel

nVidia:
1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove nvidia from add/remove programs
5. Navigate to device manager->display adapters->highlight nVidia and click uninstall or remove but don't reboot
6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
8. Run Driver Cleaner
9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
10. Install the new drivers

Other:
1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
2. Remove driver from add/remove programs

The issue is that video card companies stop supporting, and adding features for older cards when new ones come out. So even though there are newer drivers available, they don't normally actually add anything for your card. In the odd case the new stuff that is added can actually cause problems, so it MIGHT be worth trying to rollback.

The back of my gfx card's box uses screenshots from COD4 to show its technology. (The card's, not the game's.) That makes me think it's newer. (BTW, in case you're wondering, it's a Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT with overclocking from BFG.)

Dude I'm not going to do that for two reasons
1 I use a shared computer
2 Everyother mod works fine and version 2.0 of fortress forever worked fine

Ok so your unwilling to scrub your drivers For the reasons you posted. Have you tried anything else? You still haven't done any of the above. I bet you didn't even click the steam link I posted like the other guy did. You want help but yet you are unwilling to follow suggestions.

I cleaned up my drivers and installed new ones, but I still get a crash. On the plus side, however, it took longer than usual to crash.

Nelson340 post some system specs please so we know what we are working with.

proccesor
ram
nvida 9600 gt

Also are you over clocking it? is the cooling fan running on your 9600? Try all default card settings if you are over clocking it.

Processor: Intel Pentium D w/ 2.66 ghz per core
RAM: 1 GB

Yes, the cooling fan is running on it. Also, I'm not really overclocking it, it came with it out of the box.

Forgive me for thread revival, but this is starting to happen in other Source games. My reported victims:

*Half-Life 2
*Synergy
*Garry's Mod
*Counter-Strike Source
*SMod
*(rarest of all) Team Fortress 2
This has also been happening if I bump the settings down.

Oh, and where could I get 2GB of RAM for a cheap price? I'm starting to think that that's the problem.
