software for video coverage
okay, so i've been having thoughts on covering big internet based matches (not just FF) using HLTV and the such, but taking production levels one step further. bandwidth aside for a second, imagine a team of people doing a live cover of a match, where two or three guys act as "cameramen", ie sitting on HLTV (minus the VGUI) while capturing their screen directly to an audio/video stream. one or two more guys act as "commentators" with a mic [and camera?] capturing again directly to audio[/video] stream. a "producer" would then receive these audio/video streams into some sort of custom made veejay type program, and build up what the viewers see, then pass on a single processed stream to some sort of distribution server. all of the team would keep contact in vent or TS or something ofc to coordinate stuff.
what are people's thoughts? are there any packages out there that might be of use? what OSes are best for each stage of the process? |

Good idea .. I know Ihmhi was talking about this. Source TV is still broken in FF so it's not something we can play with right now.
I don't know off the top of my head any program to this, basically it would be two systems, or a system, that has a video capture device (preferably a secondary hardware device) to capture the game, then stream it live an editor where it has about a 30 second to 1 minute delay from editor to stream machine which streams the feed being sent from editor to connected users etc. It's basically a live production setup, its not simple task to do over the internet as there is alot of raw streaming data. I'll talk to the video producer I know here in SD and ask him about it. |

i know raw is definitely out of the question.. i was just thinking of a bunch of compressed video streams being slapped together. it know quality will be horrible if this was done tomorrow, but hey, in a couple of years it might be doable.

Watching HLTV is the only thing the screws up. The demos that record during a match, if you play them back, work just fine.

when your bring up the FF stats in game (in,out, fps, ping etc) you can clearly see the problem with hltv
when nothing moves the "in" stays at around 90-150 as soon as there is movement on the screen it will gorw to 400-600 and once you see multiple players, or muliple gun shots, or explosions or concs, you will see it jump to 2000+. all the other things in the stats remain normal |

I think something like this would be best suited in an OVD format. Full game format has double the action, and splitting cameras up between two spots might make things hard to keep track of. In an OVD format, you can have like... 4 people cover all of the action. Have a guy looking outside the base, calling INC's for the director who changes the feed to whatever camera he thinks would get the most action and then the commentators comment on what they are seeing.
Could you imagine how hectic that would be in a full game? Keeping track of two O's and two D's?

I would be stoked to be involved in something like this. If you need volunteers to be cameramen, you've got one right now.

okay, can anyone point me towards some linux libraries that can handle fast image processing, suitable for video?
this is the sort of interface i'm trying to achieve, much like a hardware A/B vision mixer: Last edited by mervaka; 10-16-2008 at 11:04 PM. |

update
i'm currently designing the GUI. here's my prototype input channel strip:
EDIT: as you can see, my original design has changed somewhat. i'm currently trying to work out a way of drawing cue windows more efficiently. 8 of those channels just fucking rapes my CPU. Last edited by mervaka; 10-21-2008 at 05:25 PM. |
