:( My video card finally died. Suggestions on a replacement?

I've had my current nVidia 980gtx for I wanna say 4-5 years and it just bit the dust. Tiling, vertical green lines on either of my dual monitors after about 6 months of random issues with it. I did some research and found that baking it in the oven to reflow the solder on the connections might be a solution, but I don't think I'm crazy enough to try that and it's only a temporary fix at best anyway. So I need to replace this bitch.

Anyone up-to-date with the current video card tech that's available today? I hear the 900 series cards are great, but they're too expensive. I'm willing to shell out $1-$200 on one. I'm sure anything around that price range will trounce my existing card specs all around. I've always had good luck with nVidia in the past, but might be open to an ATI card if it has comparable specs that would work well with an AMD board/cpu. I'm also looking for a card that will take up around the same or less power than my old one.

I'm on the same card as you. 5 years old. Please don't die, sweet videocard.

Though it is the bottleneck of my system right now . . .

Speaking of bottlenecks, we'll need other specs before recommending new equipment.

These are my 'specs'

Do I need to upgrade also?

Amd slashed prices on the 280/x, prob best bang for buck right now.
I will try and wait for 20nm gpu's next year, think amd will bring the first out, but would be very interested in nvidia offering will be with full maxwell.

Still happy with my 7850 2gb card for now.

Check what psu you have ( watts ) and if so is it bronze/gold rated etc.
high wattage non rated psu is pointless.

I'd wait till Black Friday sales start if you can before upgrading.

I ended up going with this ATI R7 265 for $110 on newegg:

Not a bad deal considering it's a bit faster than the 7850 and less than half the price. 10x more cores than my current card, 4x the ram as well.

Edit: It has arrived!
I was half expecting the casing to be plastic like my old card, but it looks to be aluminum so hopefully that will keep it cooler. And it's about a quarter smaller.

Very nice choice!
Check out this little thread I made for RadeonPRo:
http://forums.fortress-forever.com/s...013#post508013

Really nice for HDTV owners. The dynamic Vsync removes mouselag, while stopping tearing.

If you install SweetFX the Vibrance takes all the grey out of colors, so everything is bright like Farcry 3.

The Bloom and HDR can add some nice effects too, but on some maps, like dustbowl, they bleed out colors too much.

If you installed RAPTR from AMD, be sure to uninstall it! this will probably double your FPS.
