Official Diablo 3 Thread

I think Diablo 3 deserves an official thread of discussion that isn't related to bashing the game's art style.

Personally, I can't wait for this game to come out, just like Starcraft 2; but unlike Starcraft 2, i'm looking forward to playing an RPG online, without having to worry about the "MMO" portion and it not being WoW at all.

Having played countless amounts of MMOs over the year, an Online RPG is going to be refreshing once more.

I just hope they release a map editor this time around, kinda like Neverwinter Nights did... that would be awesome...

Here are the things I'm looking forward to:
  • Rune system
  • The game being built around coop
  • The story

Things I'm not looking forward to:
  • Skill system (so many passives!)
  • The so far schizophrenic art style

I really wish we had synergies. All of these passives are dull. For every wizard spell there are about 2-4 passive abilities that effect that one spell. That's just not very neat to me. Too much like the WoW skill tree... and I really don't like it at all.

Yea I have to agree with the skill tree system... it's like they've got the WoW talent team working on it... it's quite annoying.

Diablo 1 - great game

Diablo 2 - good game

Diablo 3 - an ok game (but time will tell)

I am not looking for D3 to be that good of a game. Somewhere between D1 and D2 the developers dropped the ball. D1 did a great job of pulling the player into the diablo universe, while D2 was "just a game". There was plot building in D2, but not as good as D1.

D1 was probably the best RPG I have ever played. D2 was a fun game, but it was not great. There were so many factors that reduced the quality of D2, such as the sounds, the environment, the quality of the graphics,,,,,

When D1 was released, it displayed cutting edge graphics.

When D2 was released it was several years behind the times with an 800X600 resolution. There was even a backlash towards blizzard as to "why" 1024 X 768 was not an option.

When D3 is released, what can we expect? Graphics that are 9 - 10 years old with 1024 X 768 max setting?

Hopefully the developers will return to what made D1 a great game, and bring those factors back to D3 - but I doubt it.

I've played D1. A reimagining of D1 would be epic - a lot of its faults were with its graphics. I also started with playing D2 so not being able to do certain stuff (run, for one) made D1 feel pretty clunky to me.

I care most about support for stuff like clans in D3. Gotta represent!

Blizzard is making too much money from WOW to work on anything else. That is another reason why starcraft 2 has not been released in the past 8 - 10 years.

SC2 and D3 should have been released years ago. But blizzard got blinded with the money from WOW.

Gamers - what about D3?

Blizzard management - WHAT DID YOU SAY?? I cant hear you from counting all of the money we are making from WOW.

This is another reason why I am not expecting too much from D3. The developers are working on WOW and not focusing on making a quality D3 game.

I liked D2 a hell of a lot more than D1 for many reasons.

But what I'm seriously looking forward to the most about D3 is the game style. I can live with altered skill trees, or different textures and lighting, but I really miss a good 3rd Person point click rpg game that's not complicated to play.

Just the thought of becoming an arrow firing machine while I spam my left mouse button repeatedly to watch my spray of arrows and the repeated "thwerp" sound gets me all giddy. Really I just love the game style above all else in those Diablo games, it's soo incredibley easy to learn, to operate, and the replayability is there, either with harder difficulty settings, or with starting new classes.

MMO's are huge time sinks, no matter what they try to do to their games to make things quicker and more entertaining, the items and encounters have to be limited by a time factor and/or group factors. Whereas the Diablo games you just hop in or hop out of the game at will. You replace your equipment regularily, only holding onto some really cool find for any really long period of time. But even then you could be quick to replace it a couple dungeon levels lower for something just slightly better.

I just love these game styles. Never Winter Nights although close to that style is more complicated. Diablos are pure simplicity yet hella fun. And unless they make the models and textures cartoony or something, whatever they use won't hinder my enjoyment of the game in the least.

Well, hey, as long as you're keeping an open mind about it.

When are you going to make the "Kev waits for D3" site?

This is an absolute myth. You don't understand how Blizzard works, man.

Not counting the standard corporate departments (HR, the Board, legal, tech support, etc.), Blizzard basically has 3 divisions.

WoW Division
Speaks for itself. They solely work on World of Warcraft, including patches as well as creating new content like expansions.

RTS Division
They work on one game at a time. Right now they're working on SC2. Presumably they'd be making WC4 after that, etc.

Third Division
This division works on whatever Blizzard's third project may be. In this case, it's Diablo 3.

You could say that the WoW Division gets a hell of a lot more funding - that much is true - but that's because they bring in more money. Moreover, I don't think it's a matter of just throwing money at the team working on D3. A lot of the stuff they're doing takes time.

Don't forget they also have the 4th division for their unannounced MMO that's in development, though it has been confirmed that it's a completely new IP, which means it's not a StarCraft, WarCraft, or Diablo MMO.

Kev do you realize you seem to jump to many conclusions before something is ever released?

I remember you already deciding about TF2 and FF before they ever made it to the public. And you seem to have already made up your mind about D3 while it's not even out of production and into testing yet.

Hammock, why you wanna be so serious about everything?

And I was right on the money with tf2, but this thread aint about tf2 is it?

===============

Time will tell with D3. But I know what blizzard did with D2, and I expect them to do the same thing with D3.

I will probably buy D3 when it comes out, and I sure hope its a good game. I might even install all three games - D1, D2 + LOD, D3 and then play a marathon starting with D1 and going all the way through D3. Now that would be cool.

Actually, ~kev~ is on to something. I think I'll play through D1 and D2 RIGHT before D3 comes out. In fact, I think I'll do it with my group of friends who has been playing the series since the release of the first one.

I... I'm so going to do this.

First, though, I have to figure out exactly HOW to get D1 to work on my computer for more than 5 minutes =\.

Diablo 2 is incredible. Ever since the first day back in '00, when I was only seven. Simple design, easy to play, just love it. Diablo 3, in my opinion, looks like it's going to be complicated.
