The Welcome Committee

Hi all,

With the next FF installment somewhere on the horizon, I think we should plan a small "welcome committee" for the newbies who are trying out the game.

Anyone who clicks on "Find Servers" and sees a bunch of 0/22 will leave and uninstall forever.

To prevent this, I propose that we leave the pickups behind for a few days and just focus on filling some pubs. Critical mass could take over if we get a large enough group to stick around and keep on playing.

Thoughts? Questions? Concerns?

P.S. - Don't kick their asses TOO hard. We need fresh meat. You can go back to kicking my ass in pickups when everyone ragequits a few days later.

Sure, I'd be down to pub exclusively for a bit after my exams to make the game at least look somewhat alive.

More than once I've heard the "well I was going to play but there was only one populated server and it was locked" (the pickup server) story.

I've seen a handful of people try out the game and really enjoy it... a good sign!

Hope 2.5 comes sometime soon. Early summer?

Ahab, you are a saint amongst men. Let's do this. I honestly can't wait to do some proper AvD. Haven't had a good Dustbowl match in ages!

This is a fantastic idea. When does the 3v season end, because that could be a good stopping point for pickups, at least temporarily.

IMO though, I think for FF to succeed, both pub and pickup play are needed.

We need pub-friendly maps as well as maps that people can learn to transition into eventually playing pickups.

I often wonder just how many newer players will eventually end up getting into the whole pickup thing... I've seen a fair number in the past week hop in and say "wow awesome game" and have actually come back a few times already, but I question what percentage will ever feel the desire to go beyond the casual pub to the more competitive pickup scene.

I wonder the same thing all the time because when I played TFC, that's all I did. I love playing in pubs, I only really play competitively because there's not a big pub scene. If we had a successful pub community like when :e0: was still around, I think we'd have a lot more player retention, and that would lead to more people playing pickups as well.

Right now everyone who is new to the game or genre thinks even pub games are daunting at times. Imagine how they would feel if they joined a pickup and played with a bunch of TF vets... Hell, I've been playing for a long time and I still feel puny compared to some of the FF greats.

Yeah, I agree that it definitely needs to grow from the bottom to the top, so to speak.

I'm going to assume that I'm an anomaly when I say that I started off in pubs for a week or two then immediately started spectating and eventually participating in pickups games.

DMT joined the pub tonight. Says he checks several times a week for players but only sees pickup servers and o-t.

I think there are several players waiting for "The Bat Signal" as it were to fill the pub.

This is doable. : D

All they need is a leader. Shit, once I get back from vacation, I'll be looking to start another pub server and see how popular it will be compared to Ricejew's crappy mccrapperton pub server.

it doesn't help that 98% of ppl are banned from OT too... someone should talk to them about maybe reseting their banlist for the sake of ff?

just use the official ff server, that is if ricey hasn't already sold it to the armenian mafia in exchange for jewgold.

ive seen quite a few new players recently its all a good sign. however while i don't think pickups are bad inherently, not playing on pub servers doesn't help the game at all.

for now lets use riceys jew server to fill it up, since none of us are banned from that. (it makes sense right.) also it justifies ricey spending his jew gold on it.

atleast until motto/kube gets his server going.

After the 3v3 league ends, pickups won't stop... Pickups will never stop.

The gameplay between pickups and pubs is so drastic, that many people (including me) just outright prefer to play pickups. It's not that pubs are bad, but when im playing a game of CTF for example, i feel that more action occurs in a 4v4 pickup than it does in a 12v12 pub.

Then don't play CTF. I really miss 24 person AvD matches. (And some muthafucking tiger!) Let's vote those maps into the rotation!

I normally play offensive Scout anyway, so I figure that would give some new players some chances to get some frags so they don't quit right off.

Oh, you mean this one?

*HINT* Have some events. Rice's server. For great justice.

All I've heard outside of CTF for pickups is Warpath.

Would AvD even work? I remember mentioning it and it being shot down because it would still play just like a pub.

I still see a lack of specification.

What kind of crowd are you attempting to cater to? Really that's the first and most important question. Based on the crowd, would then set a standard time for us to play. By example:

People getting out of school, 3-5 (any time between the start of 3-5 that is.) pm would be their play times, and perhaps after 7 (dinner).

Then you have the daily comune - your standard 9-5 people who just want to come home and relax.

Then there's the natural pc gamers who are on whenever they can be.

And these are just simple examples. The idea is to locate a prime-time to start playing, and the focal point of which new players will most likely install the game, to find players actually playing. In a nutshell, if I'm whenwillffout and I just get home from work, after installing this game, I should see a server with players in it. If I miss this op, then chances are, i'll consider it a dead title.

Setting a specific session at the right time will increase the chances of new players joining.
