TF2 Fans don't know sh*t about TFC
So at a video game jeopardy event, the final questions in the valve category (written by myself) was: TF2 introduced the Pay Load (PL) game-type to replace what type of TFC game-type?
There were MANY "Hard Core TF2 Players" in the room, no one guessed right. Is it really that hard of a question? |

The map itself irrelevant though. The aim is to "escort" the object, hence "Hunted-style"

AvD use the flag for capture, hence CTF=AvD.

Sooooo TF2 comes out, and these guys get really into it and really good at it, but have little knowledge of its predecessor which they probably didn't play at all and this is surprising/bad?

The anser is "What is The Hunted" by the way. When PL was anounced, they said they wanted to make a make similar to The Hunted, but didn't want a person playing at the "loot."

This is not surprising at all. It's funny when I see newcomers to FF say this mod is just a bad copy of TF2. I explain a bit of history of TFC, and then ask them a common sense question, why do you think it's called Team Fortress 222222?

Newcomer TF2 players I've seen have been quite receptive, actually.

A lot of them are the next generation of gamers.
Like there's the Quake generation (QWTF or whatever it was called), which was the one previous to mine and then the Half-Life Generation (TFC/CS), and now the HL2 (CS:S/TF2) generation. Each of those are pretty ignorant to the games that came before them and are stuck in the belief that the past games aren't as good as the one they've played. I know I don't know jack shit about the earlier TF versions and can't say I really care either... |

I agree as well. It's just those few who take the time out of their oh-so important day to bash FF because they think this is a copy of TF2.
Most tf2ers are actually quite nice. You have to give em credit though. I probably would've never liked quake, unless that was what was out when I started gaming, Every generation of gamers is going to have their favorites, and honestly, tf2 is probably built perfectly for this current generation of new gamers. But, I'm glad that there are people who see this mod and enjoy playing it, regardless of how TF2 does. |

I don't believe the fault is in TF2 players, but more-so in Stupid People.

I came into PC gaming full-time about the time that CS:S was at it's prime. I personally played it for a bit, and didn't like it at all. Then installed CS:CZ and really enjoyed it. So I come from the Source Gen, but I actually think that Quake is one of the greatest games ever. Hell, sometimes I like to boot up some old school games like X-Com just to try to live the past that I never experienced just so I can see the improvement in gaming since the time. I don't believe a lot of people are like me though, I love to see what progress has been made, and I completely respect any older game that laid the foundation for games which sometimes excel the newer generation in any aspect it does, if it does. Now these new games though, I hold way too many grudges against them. They all just seem to copy from one another, and never add anything new to the mix aside from updated graphics. Which fuck looks, what's a game if it looks good but plays like shit? A $50 benchmarking tool (*cough*Crysis(but not Warhead)*cough*). |

We had a TF2 player join last night and tell me how he knows all the classes inside and out of TF2 but asked why he can't kill anything with the FF scout. I explained a few of the major differences and he seemed appreciative rather than snooty. Not a bad thing.

Part of it, Lost, is how you deal with these people. You did the 100% right thing in that situation. You (took the time to) explain it to people. You didn't just assume they should know it all, and that if they didn't know, well, too fucking bad.
I have taken time during my gameplay to help out new players. I really can't say this enough, though.... this is how we learn how to play these games. When I first got TFC(yeah..... back with HL1..... those were the days), I didn't know shit about the game, the classes, the maps, nothing. I didn't much like the HW.... but Solly came fairly naturally to me. I saw people doing all kinds of neat shit. Conc-jumps, rocket jumps, EMP jumps, pipe jumps, nade jumps..... combos..... all kinds of shit. I asked people how they did that, and 99% of the time, the player(s) would stop playing for a minute, and explain it, demonstrate it, and then tell me what I was doing wrong when I tried it the first time. I remember them telling me, "Don't sweat it.... it takes practice, but now you know how." I often went back to those servers, just because of the cool players there. Which is why I do my part to do the same things. Sure, I trash talk.... but when it comes to showing someone how things work, or where to go.... I don't mind taking time to show them around. Chances are, they will help someone else out sometime down the road.

don't forget the portal-tards. When OrangeBox was released, Portal was not seperately purchased in retail.
