phpbb and gamers/clans/ff

I know there are many flavors of php out there. Some people have expressed interest in our vbulletin-->forum link and are curious about porting it over to phpbb to help them limit spammers and idiots.

If I wanted to make such a port, what version would be the best to start with? Is there a general phpbb type plugin that will usually fit in any version of phpbb? Do they all use generally the same global db structure and objects? etc etc etc.

Thanks,
Scuzzy

phpbb isn't spam proof either.
I manage a forum which gets 5 to 10 fake users signed up each day.
And about 3 threads a day about pills and porn...

Thats with user validation and captcha turned on.

If you really want to stop spammers you have to alter the sign up process to something which ain't common.

I would go with phpbb3 as it is brand new. The only problems with it is that it is only in RC3. =/

I had similar problems with spam on my phpbb forum, now I just have both validation + captcha turned off and use something along the lines of this:

Haven't had any problems since

Maybe you should ask(or, I could...now that I think of it...) the creator of the Widownet forums. See what he uses for account creation. He verifies all users before they are granted access...which you can expect, given the subject matter.

As suggested before, I'd be willing to help with the programming.

I've got a thing telling anyone who recently registered to IM or e-mail me to be activated.

I get like one new member a month, so it's not that big of a deal.

Seems to me that image validation doesn't work because spammers either a) use scripts to read the source for the validation code or b) put them in by hand. Any easy work around is to encode the validation in the source and then either encode the user's input or decode the validation when making the check. This way, the correct validation code isn't visible anywhere but the image. Furthermore, I think Scuzzy requires members to have played on the server in order to register, right? That at least makes it difficult for spammers to register via scripts.

I could probably think of something better given the time.

Other forums have rules against this (HardForum for example) but I think some people are just used to doing it.

Yea thats how Scuzzy has the forums set up. You must have logged into the servers "x" amount of time i think in order to register with the forums. Then each players steamid is linked with thier forum account.

Yeah, In order to register in the forums you have to have played on our game server in the last 3 days from the same IP address. It associates the steam-id from that IP address with the forum account. Each steam-id can have one and only one forum account. If you've been banned from the servers it shows you your steam-id and that you've been banned, but does not allow you to register with the forums and points you to the banned inquiry form. We've never had a spammer get past that.

that works well, because:

a) its unique to your website
b) it requires a SteamID (which are not worth spammers buying tbfh)

I just kind of like how phpbb looks prettier than vbulletin. That and I know it better than vbulletin, so.
