Mass Effect - Crashing *fixed!*

This seems to be a pretty common problem with this game but so far I have not been able to resolve it.

I downloaded Mass Effect from Steam because it was only $20.00 and i've read some pretty good things about it.

So far I have not been able to play at all. Right after the initial cut-scene where the ship goes into hyper-drive, the game freezes and I get a black screen. The only solution at that point is to power off my pc and restart it.

I've tried updating video drivers, updating directX, updating sound driver, disabling hardware acceleration for sound, as well as the usual, deleting temp files, ETC.

I have also messed extensively with the ingame graphics and audio setttings all to no avail.

Anyone else played this game and had any better luck than me?

**EDIT - FIXED**
Thanks for the replies.
Turns out it was an issue with the latest nvidia drivers. Apparently Mass Effect doesn't play nicely with PhysX.

I reverted back to an older nvidia driver (175.19) and all crashing problems have gone away.

Sweet game by the way. well worth the $20.00!

It might be odd, but try running it in a window and not full-screen?

That happens to me for pretty much any game. After swapping out my power supply I realized it wasn't a PSU issue, and could very well be the CPU or the GPU.... so far I've yet to find a resolution to the elusive "black screen" problem that i've been plagued with for 2 years...

You can check this thread to see if there's anything in it that can help you, and if you haven't gotten the downloadable content yet, I think it has a patch in it too. It's free, and works with Steam now.

To get the downloadable content, you have to follow the steps here. Your CD key is located at \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts\Electronic Arts\Mass Effect (tm)\ergc
