Most efftive way of backing up a 9 GB folder?

Ok, so i decided to reformat my system. I got the windows XP disk, the number, im all ready to go. But, the problem is, i need to backup all of my music (inb4thepr0nfolderlulz). I didnt know i had this much fucking music! i have around 9GB of music. What is the most cost effective, fastest, way to back it up?

What resources area available? Do you have a second hard drive? If so put it on there and keep it disconnected while the system's being redone so that you don't accidentally format the wrong disk...

1) 9 GB of music is nothing. I've got 20, all purchased.
2) Make sure your computer is capable of burning DVDs, before you go and buy blanks. Just 'cause you can burn CDs doesn't mean you can burn DVDs. You'll need about 2 for backing yours up.
Or, hell, you can get one of those huge flash drives. Quick browsing of the internet shows that you can find a 16 g one for $40.

Download a program called Acronis True Image 11 Home. Acronis is a program which allows you to make an 'image' of your entire computer or a single folder. During the process, it gives you the option of how large of a file you want to save - 650mb (CD), 4.65gb (DVD) or the original size. If you choose the original size, Acronis will create one image file (.tib), but if you want to burn the files to CD or DVD, choose the corresponding option and Acronis will create separate files for easy burning. There are a plethora of other features such as a re-imaging boot-cd, file encryption and partition creation, but, in my opinion, one of the best features is that Acronis will compress the data that was backed up. In my experience, I've seen it compress data up to 50% - so your 9gb has now turned into 4.5gb - small enough to fit on one DVD.

Anyway, that was my best go at how to back up 9gb. I hope it helps a little

Yeah... if you have the ability to burn DVDs you could just put all of that on 2 DVDs. They dont' cost that much to get.

Make sure you zip it first of course.

Pick up a 250GB portable hard drive. They cost like $100 now. Use it to back it up. Plus it's good extra storage.

I said this in your other thread. Partition. No?

If you don't know:

A partition is splitting up a hard drive into sections. Great when you have only one HDD. You don't have to bother backing things up then when you want to format.

I use Norton (formerly PowerQuest) Partition Magic 8.
It isn't free but I have only ever needed to use it once though, so don't really know of know what the hot free alternatives are. My internet is slower that dial-up atm so can't be arsed looking. Maybe you could use a trial or this EASEUS Partition Manager Home Edition.

Tips:
You want your c: section pretty small just for Windows and program files and you can store all your important stuff on the new section of the hdd.
You can roughly estimate how much you'll require by seeing how large the Programs Folder is atm.

I have well over 250 (owned) gigs of music. I went out and purchased a couple 500 gig externals to back it all up to, so i never have to worry about getting them off my computer.

you can pick up 500 gig externals for next to nothing these days, and they come in very handy... so yea, go do that.

Or for a better price, pick up an external bay and a 500 to 640gig hard drive for that same 100 bucks.

Defrag system first, zip the folder, then 7z it for ultra compression, that will lower it probably by half the size. Then go purchase a 5 gb USB drive, and transfer the 7z file over to the thumb drive. Reformat, then transfer everything back.

This is probably the quickest way to do it, and if it will take some time, do the transfer while you sleep.
