Motherboard problem?

So yesterday I finally decided to hookup the HD Audio firewire of my antec nine hundred case to my ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe. Everything was going smoothly, the slot on the motherboard had a missing pin and the connector had a stopper in the same pin-hole. I connected it, restarted the computer and when I got to iTunes I connected my headphones into the front jack. Thats when hell broke loose, the computer completely shutoff and wouldn't turn back on when I pressed the power button. I think the motherboard is fried... I disconnected the connector, I unhooked all power supply cables and reconnected everything, I even checked to make sure the power button on the case was still connected properly (checked to see that the wire to the button didn't rip out either). My last option will be to remove the mother board and replace it with my old ASUS board from my last build to test if it actually is a motherboard problem. Has this happened to any of you before? Please post any suggestions as my motherboards warranty ran out a month ago and I am stuck.

Computer specs:
ANTEC Nine Hundred Case
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
AMD Athlon 5600 X2 Socket AM2
4X512MB Corsair XMS
HIPER 580W Power Supply
EVGA 7800GT GPU
blah...

Final note: The computer has been running flawlessly for god knows how long, so hopefully ASUS won't let me down... eh.

Couple of things. I have noticed issues, over the years, with the pin outs for external connectors matching motherboards. Your specific combination is common for me as Antec and ASUS are my primary "go tos" when I build and I build 20-30 systems a year. I have seen the issue more with USB but it can happen with firewire as well.

Here's my suggestion to you:

1) Remove power from the system
2) Remove the CMOS battery
3) jumper the CMOS reset jumper and let it stand like that for 20 seconds plus...I know only a few seconds is all it's "supposed" to need but humor me.
4) Reset the CMOS jumper and reinstall the CMOS battery
5) try to fire it up.

If that still fails I would call ASUS tech support and play dumb on your warranty period. I'll bet they find some way to help you out if you're only a month or two outside of warranty. I've always been happy with the level of support they provide.

Now I am getting the old 2 second startup then shutdown trick. So the power supply seems to be working though it could be damaged. idk what to do. I am going to keep trying ideas, if all else fails there is a custom computer store nearby who fixes things as I don't trust geek squad or any of the bigger companies out there.

More than likely the pinouts weren't correct and you fried something. You always have to check the pin assignments in the documentation when you connect one of those plastic housings with the pins all together in a block for USB or Firewire. I've had to fix this problem before, though it was from a USB header, not Firewire just like Noc.. Had to replace the board. Was an MSI board and the board still worked, it just acted funny with the other USB header that shared the same electrical components as the fried one. So basically half the USB ports on the board were dead.. anyway it sounds like you were significantly less lucky.

See if you can warranty the board. Or if you want, file a lawsuit against whichever company didn't follow the spec. haha.

Have you tried disconnecting everything but power , video, ram and only those wires necessary to system operation from the board? Then reset the CMOS again prior to powering up. Try stripping it down and see if your problem goes away. If it works then add items one at a time....staying away from Firewire...

That 900 is a new chassis design and it looks like a nice one...but if I were betting on who deviated from specs my money'd be on Antec as the chassis has far more hand assembly involved than the motherboard. Most of motherboard production is automated. Possible...just less likely.

Well it is the motherboard. I just hooked up my old board and the power stayed on and things booted. All the fans were spinning and I left it on for an hour. With the other motherboard in it takes 2 seconds and its off. Well looks like its time to beg ASUS.
