Upgraded but still low fps
I upgraded yesterday to an Nvidia 7600GS and added another gig of ram. From what I've gathered i should be able to run things decently. However even if i run FF in Direct X 7, turn all vid settings low, and use the fps script - I still only get like 30 fps, and thats when im not near a battle. If there's people on my screen or shooting, etc I go to like 10 fps.
I have tried changing the video settings from the recommended high, to medium, to low, and nothing makes a difference. I have no clue whats going on but could it be my power supply? My power supply unit doesn't say how many watts it puts out and the new video card requires 300W. If my psu is too weak, wouldn't my comp just crash rather than give poor fps? |

Thanks for the config split, but the point was that I shouldn't need an fps config just to get a decent fps now that i've upgraded.

Your computer would crash if the PSU didn't have enough power to go around yes.
What is your CPU, it's quite possible that it is the bottleneck. A super good video card won't help you much if you have a slow CPU. |

MY cpu is a little out of date being a pentium 4 2.4 ghz. But a 2.4 is really not THAT bad.
half-life2 came out like 2 years ago, there are many lower cards than a 7600 that will run hl2. So although im not trying to argue with any of you, with my current system I know i should be getting more than 10 fps. Not to mention I know someone with the same setup I have, and they get 100 fps. Update: Bought a 500 watt power supply. Installed and no difference. In fact I'm pretty sure my fps is getting worse by the day lol. I get about 10-20 fps now anytime i'm outside of a respawn. Drivers are all up to date, vsync off, etc. I cant even get more than 80 fps in tfc and thats not a steady 80 either. I tried playing FF in 800x600 as a last resort (because I really didn't want to have to play in 800). And to my surprise I got about 10 fps here as well.... Something is clearly wrong. |

No there is definitely something wrong, I run a socket 478 2.4ghz P4 overclocked to 2.7ghz, and a X1300 PRO 256mb agp 8x and I run an average of 69 fps in FF. And an average of 58 with my cpu at default clock.
Although under heavy loads on maps like dustbowl and cornfield I do lag badly, I'm planning on a last resort upgrade to my agp system going 2.8ghz P4 overclocked to 3.1ghz and a HIS X1950 PRO 512mb agp 8x in a few months. Your cards memory may be faulty... and double check your drivers. |

cpu is definitely a bottleneck in spam/action (as the code that makes FF a hl2 mod is likely to be mostly executed on CPU).
even if you had a 8800gts you would only get half or a third the FPS of someone with 3ghz C2D generally, environment/empty server FPS is cpu/vid combo and will change depending on cpu type/speed and vid. but FPS in spam/action is majorly affected by CPU speed and does not improve with lower resolutions. |

Do you play counter-strike:source? If so, what fps do you get?
Hit ctrl-alt-del, click "task manager", bottom left hand corner - how many Processes are running? Example "Processes:32" When was the last time you did a virus scan? What about a scan for ad-ware or spy ware? When was the last time you defragged your system? Do you have the latest video card drivers installed? do you have an up-to-date anti virus software installed? Are you running windows XP? If so, do you have service pack 2 installed and is your system up to date with the latest security patches? Do you have high speed internet, if so do you have a hardware firewall? I used to work for an ISP in Houston, Texas. People would call us complaining that their internet was slow. One of our customers - the FBI kicked in their door for uploading pictures of children doing sex acts. Come to find out the customer was in their 70's and barely knew how to turn their computer on. Someone had hacked their system, and turned it into an FTP server. The FBI figured all this out after they seized ever computer part in the house. Your question gives little insight as to why you might be getting poor performance. There are too many variables, just like the older couple who had their door kicked in. Its hard to tell why your system might be running slow if its ate up with bugs or running too many processes. As far as I know, your system has been hacked and you are uploading warez to china while you are playing FF. All that gig of ramm did was allow more connections to the warez server listening on port 21 of your system. So how about some more information? |

52 is high
Normal processes is 30 - 35 Right now, with Firefox and 3 tabs open, thunderbird, and 2 folders open I have 32 processes - and that includes anti-virus. This is my work system which is XP home. My home / gaming machine runs about 28 - 33 processes. Click - start / run and type in msconfig and click ok. Under the start up tab at the top, disable stuff like quick time, real player, adobe acrobat reader, microsoft office - just be careful not to disable anything your system needs to start up. When in doubt, leave it checked. You should be able to get that 52 processes down to 35 or lower. This means your processor will have more time to work on the game instead of adobe reader, or MS office that aint doing jack at the time. |
