I hate Vista so much. The tcpip.sys half open connection limit of 10 makes it impossible to browse the internet when doin p2p too.. garrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrrr.
Is this an atapi DVD, SATA or USB? If it's an ATAPI check what controller your motherboard has to make sure it can properly drive ATAPI devices. I had to ditch both of DVD drives that I carried over from an old build as the controller for that port on the board would not handle atapi properly. P35 series chipset just for an FYI.

SATA, Samsung SH-S203B. I am able to fix it by unplugging the fucking thing and booting into Vista, then powering down again and replugging it in.

I don't think the Asus P5E bios is cutting the drive out completely when I disable it as it won't come back if I toggle the device channel in the bios between reboots.

Anyway, it's fucking annoying. I went ahead and wiped out the Gear drivers from my system leaving Itunes in place. We'll see how it goes. DVD drive has returned for the time being.

The worst part is there are shitloads of people complaining about this crap on the web, yet no real solution it seems.

I read there is a utility for XP that you could run that would do somethin and make the disappeared drive come back. Gonna see what I can find for Vista that might do that..

In my experience Vista absolutely does NOT handle hung hardware well at all.

Thats because creature purposly messed up the drivers for all their soundcards for Vista. I don't know why but they did.

I really wish I could say I'm surprised...but I'm not. Reading between the lines I wonder if this is some short-sighted scheme to drive sales of new products? It seems to me that sound cards don't drive replacement like video, hard drives or other products. Blaming failure on the OS then would make a new product more attractive.

I have been battling Vista since the beta. I feel your pain. I must be masochistic because I stay with it while screaming at my screen. yesterday my HTC suddenly stopped being recognized and that was "almost" the final straw. I keep saying that... Oh and I can't get sound to work very well in Max Payne 1. Good game.
