AVG free edition from http://www.download.com

I have been using it for several months with no problems. Its not a resource hog like norton or mcafee. Everyone that I have talked to that uses it, likes it.

There isn't a good anti virus out there that is free and will protect you like one you pay for. I'm running the beta of NOD32's Security Suite and I can tell you its damn good. Stay away from Norton and Mcafee. BitDefender is nice but needs some muscle to push it or it'll slow you down. Antivir and AVG are decent free antivirus programs. Overall I prefer Nod32 but if you are going to pay for it wait for this Suite to be released.

That is false, symantec, mcafee, trendmicro are all paid and tend to miss many virus.
Comodo does not charge because it has many other security offering for corporate clients. Free does not always mean it not as good of a product. Look at FF

You can download a legal NOD32 fix that gives you 16 million days of trial I think, best option if you ask me.

I do too though, over time, it does seem to take an increasingly larger load on the system to run it. Just it's multiple NTFS stream seems to slow drive access.

You can't compare a mod to security software.

Nod32 is superior to everything listed so far (in my opinion) except for Comodo which I can't comment on since I haven't encountered it in my work yet. Avast, AVG, Antivir, Kaspersky, ect are all ok in their own right. But for a gamer or someone with performance in mind NOD32 completely dominates this category.

I don't know the release date yet. The standard antivirus is pretty good though. Last I checked the Suite is only in Release Candidate 1 which means it could still be a little while longer. You can find leaked versions of it if you look around. I'm currently running it at my job and we've been throwing it on virus/spyware infested computers to see how well it performs. So far its about average but doesn't take up a lot of resources when scanning and removing things. Thats why I like it a lot better than the rest.
