Sorry to seem like the biggest idiot but...

What is TFC and FF about really? I've heard so much about it and I even own it but I can't take the time to learn the basics and aesthetics of the game. All I know really that it's a class based game that relies(sp?) on teamwork but what is the team supposed to achieve? I read a mod article that said a closed beta was soon coming and I thought "How could I let a mod get so far and not know anything about it?!". I'd really appreciate if someone could give me the main jist of the game/mod. Thanks.

After you have read that:

Fortress Forever is a Team Fortress mod for Half-life 2's Source Engine. Our independent team is creating this mod entirely from scratch.
Fortress Forever should please those who have stuck with or been a part Half-life: TFC over the years while at the same time doing more for new TF players than any prior Fortress attempt.
Fortress Forever will be free to those who purchase Half-life 2.

Basically you've got 2 teams, the red and the blue; the red team tries to cap the blue flag and the blue team the red flag. That's it .

In an organised match each team is usually half offence and half defence. The classes which you speak of are suited to different roles so in defence an engineer, soldiers and maybe a heavy weapons guy will defend the flag. In offence people will generally play classes such as medic, scout spy and maybe demoman.

In public play the above may happen but more often new players just go for kills usually as sniper.

TFC is fun because you don't have to wait to respawn, some classes can use their weapons/grenades to propel them through the air, there's something called bunny hopping and generally the game is OTT when it comes to ways of killing your opponents. So a charged sniper rifle shot will result in the enemy exploding or gibbing Similarly a spy stabbing someone in the back will achieve the same effect (i think). A demoman can set a detpack (a bomb) and everyone in a certain radius will gibb. The heavy weapons guy has a crazy gun - far too many rounds. The medic can kill people with disease. The scout can kill with a crowbar or caltrops! Basically each of these funnier class specific abilities seem to be accentuated in the TF2 models, which means fortress is about to get funnier I'd imagine which is the main appeal of the game for many or put another way the lack of realism.

im still wondering what's so borked in TFC in comparison to other TFs that the demo is rather an offence than a defence class
Ever tried to pipe the flag at flag position in openfire/tfc? Now I believe that's the answer.
Ah, well, wrong thread

TFC is actually a bit more than that

Team Fortress actually defined the team and class based fps, it was the first popular (if not the first period) team/class based fps

You also left out the possibility of 4 teams that tfc offered

Thats certainly not just it. There are many many different game types within TF, Capture the Flag is just one of them. There is also Attack v Defend, where one team advances the flag against a team of defenders. Then there is domination, whereby the teams try to take control of various capture points by taking flags to them. Of course there is the hunted game type, when one VIP tries to avoid assassination and escape with the help of his bodyguards. There are other game types too, and skill maps for the various classes.

The various game types that TF offers are definitely one of the reasons I have enjoyed the game so much.

Also, if you can be bothered, you should check out some TFC .avi's also. I recommend this one as it has pretty much every aspect of TFC in it: TeamSpirit. And click here for some more .avi's. Just register quickly so you can download the .avi's.

EDIT: Garland, TFC Forever is a rubbish .avi :P It is boring as hell and shows pretty much nothing of TFC

fyi...demoman is used in about every defense in tfc..ESPECIALLY openfire. They usually rack up ~100 kills in a round on that map, I wouldn't call that borked, it's just something that takes skill to play well.

Demoman is a defensive staple in TFC. You should try organised TFC, dammage.
