bake gfx card in oven
yesterday my nvid 8800gtx died while playing just cause 2.
I rebooted/disassembled and tried everything under the sun but yet it still showed artifacts during bios screen and was unable to properly load in windows. I bought this card 3.5 yrs ago so warrenty was out of the question so I seeked extremer measures. I removed cooler, coolpaste. I heated up my oven to 220c. Then put it in with the card memchips etc facing downwards. set the timer to 10 minutes, then let is cool off for 10 minutes orso reassembled the card with cooler, paste etc. no visible damage to card. And it's working perfectly again Last edited by yfni; 04-03-2010 at 02:32 PM. |

Where did you hear putting a gfx card in your oven will possibly fix it?

I've read countless accounts of how well it works. Hell i couldn't find one where it did not work. not even the plastic (like the speaker/power connector) was damaged/melted in the process.)
and I feel fine Last edited by yfni; 04-03-2010 at 07:35 PM. |

That temperature is far too low to have any real impact on solder. I wonder if perhaps it impacted something in silicon? :Ponder:

Old news. Baking GPUs is an old trick. It re-heats the solder points and can improve the connection. As long as you remove the plastic and the fans, it's been known to help bring a lot of the 8800 series cards back from the dead.

If you get sent CDs in the mail, they are sometimes warped and cannot be read. By dropping them into boiling water for a few seconds, it helps flatten the disk and thus makes it readable.

You can also fix USB thumb drives and hard drives by sticking them in the freezer. My USB stick which had a LOT of important stuff on it died once. I stuck it in the freezer (in a zip lock bag of course) for like 3 hours. Got it working long enough to pull all of the data off.
