windows vista machine boots, takes forever, then randomly reboots at the login screen

just as title states, a vista machine of mine boots to the login screen (which i dont even require a password anyways) and then reboots. i went into boot options and hit disable auto reboot when crash, but it still reboots. I tried safe mode, it boots to the login screen, and stays there longer than normal, then eventually crashes

the weird thing is, we dont know the password it asks for. i even hit the login button to just try it, and not even an incorrect password notice pops up

If anyone makes a reference to reinstalling firefox or anything, i will report you.

Are there any other OSs installed on the box?
How fresh is the install?

Might have a piece of bad hardware in there. Most likely memory in my opinion/experience. If you have another computer to use and can burn cd's with it, download the memtester iso, burn it, then run it for a few hours and see if it throws any errors.

Vista defaults to the login screen with a password. There's no password. Hitting login will let you in. Make sure it's not overheating, see if you can get into the BIOS and so forth.

Or, it could be a problem with bad software. Check mozilla.com, see if they have a Vista version.

Firefox works fine with both Vista and Windows 7.

Before doing anything as radical as reinstalling Vista you might try reinstalling Firef....

kidding.

Sounds like a couple of things worth looking at. First...in the BIOS...Hardware Monitor...let the system run for a bit. How are the temps? Next, chase up memtest86 and let it scan the system. I would next chase up a hard drive utility from the mfr of your hard drive and scan the drive. This will establish a baseline of what "appears" to be sound.

I would next pull the hard drive and install it in another system that is already known good...then do a virus scan of the other hard drive. If it's finding crap then you can "try" reinstalling the infected drive after the scan and cleaning is complete. However, if it finds compromised files it's likely that the system is not recoverable and you should look at a full reformat and reinstall...this time...make sure you have decent software in place protecting you.

Get a Linux live CD for Fedora or Ubuntu, run the live desktop off the disk and use some of the Unix based diagnostic tools to see if you have anything wrong with your system. If nothing is wrong hardware wise, backup your files and reinstall vista ... or just take the files you want off of the hardrive, save them to an external source, and install an OS that isn't made of fail. WinXP and Fedora are good choices. Source games tend to run fine under WINE.
