Defragging GCF's
This documents how to defrag GCF's and links to the required files.
Defragging GCF's will often help decrease loading times and in some cases conserve minimal space. This procedure is reccomended once a month. !MAKE SURE STEAM IS CLOSED !DO NOT STOP THE PROCESS ONCE IT IS STARTED If for some reason the process is interrupted, you will be forced to re-download the "game" via STEEM. Watch The Directions (Flash) Download Location This zip contains the BAT file and the 2 files needed for defragging http://ffpub.reborndigital.com/tools...gcf_defrag.zip BAT File Code:
@echo off for %%F in (*.gcf) do "HLExtract.exe" -f -p "%%F" pause |

Yes you can within STEAM, but you have to do it one at a time, this does them all at once, and it's not as effective as this method, as well as it is slower.

Or you can just run professional defrag software which also will catch any and all gcf files. I personally use PerfectDisk 2008 because with those big files that may or may not have lots of fragments i can easily go right to it and re-run selected files for another pass and offline defrag for system files that cannot be done while system is running.

I don't think it's possible to defrag FF within Steam. I can still do it for other games like counter strike, just not FF. Maybe once it's on Steamworks it will be available?

FF doesn't use GCF files. Just use a regular defrag program.

Does this work, or should I listen to CrazyCarl?
Also, we need some forum maintenance around these parts... way too many old/outdated stickied threads and not enough new and cool stickies.

FF doesn't use GCF files so just a regular defrag program will do.

I'm pretty sure Steam defrags its files automatically now.
